X-wing second edition tournament at Gencon

By Babaganoosh, in X-Wing

I don't think it's public knowledge yet, but there's going to be a few second edition tournaments at Gencon:

https://www.gencon.com/event_finder?search=x-wing+2nd+ed

Short Description: Come celebrate the new edition! Receive a new Core Set, as well as a new TIE Advanced! Prizes will be awarded over 3 Swiss-paired rounds!

Long Description: Check-in time will close at the listed event time. Players will build a Threat 5 squad using included and provided Quick Build cards, and play three Swiss-paired rounds using special rules for deployment and gameplay. Additional prizes will be awarded throughout the event. Players may NOT participate in multiple X-Wing Second Edition Preview Tournaments. Players attempting to enroll in multiple tournaments will be denied entry. We will be hole-punching badges to prevent additional entries. Any wait list for players hoping to replace no-shows will be very limited and _will_ be capped. Tickets for this event will go on sale at 12:00 pm ET on June 16.

The $80 price tag seemed a bit out there, but reading the description it includes a Core Set and a fighter expansion, so that seems more reasonable. Not surprising they have events going for it given it's early launching there.

$60 worth of models and a $20 entry fee.

Looks like it will be all mirror matches to help keep things balanced.

X-wing and Y-wing or Advanced and double TIE Fighter.

IN.

I don't know about mirror matches. I might be Rebels vs Imps.

Looking at it closer, I think I might be wrong. The events are listed as all imp or all rebel, but that's probably just a way to keep the forces balanced. It's likely that the Rebel and Imperial events will then be combined for a larger tournament.

Looks like you sign up as either Rebels or Imps. That determines the extra ship booster you get (Y-Wing or Tie Advanced). I'm assuming the two at each time slot will be combined into one. So one tournament at 9am and one tournament at 4pm. Pricy, but intriguing.

Thanks for the heads-up! I would have to cancel some events to get in on it, but i'm pretty motivated to play 2e over 1e...

I’d heard through the grape vine this was coming. Four sessions with 112 seats each. 448 players total.

I’m torn on this one. Of course, my only reason for going to GenCon was to pick up 2.0. So, IF I can get a ticket to this, it at least guarantees I get a Core Set and expansion. Hopefully, they’ll make the conversion kits available as well at this event.

On the other hand, I’d kept Thursday free until 5:00 so I could stand in line, get 2.0, then spend the rest of the day till 5:00 wandering the vendor area and looking around the rest of the Con since this is my first visit.

I'm passing on this. I was using Thursday to wander around the dealers area and other parts of the con. Plus I already have a core set and 2 of each conversion kits on pre-order at my FLGS so I have no need of a second core set.

But will you get the promo damage deck for full size adult type people?

I wish I had known about this when I signed up for events. Not redoing my whole schedule now though.

This is where I am on this too... Plus, already pre-ordered the starter anyway. I need the second damage deck.

I knew I was going to want to get the starter at GenCon if they were seeking them, so I only preordered the Imp and Scum CKs and planned to get the Starter and Rebels there. Lucky for me, assuming I can even get into these.

I wonder how fast the tickets will sell? It’s an additional premium on top of full retail, but it’s the first chance to play with the new Starter, and it saves an annoying line wait...

these events make me wish I would have tried to attend. Sounds like a total blast.

****, I wish I were going! This seems like a lot of fun ?

Is the consensus that most players have V2 on pre-order in order to support the LGS and won't (likely) buy it at Gencon?

My plan is to go to Gen Con and get EVERYTHING. Then, take it back to my LGS and run 2.0 demos several times a week from Aug 5 til Sept 13 to help promote X-Wing and 2.0 for our LGS. Hopefully, it will result in an increase of new players in our area.

I’m going to be trying to do something similar with my game group. I lost them all in 1e due to the release of a bunch of ships they didn’t recognize, and the feeling that those ships were overpowered compared to ships they DID recognize.

I’m really hoping 2e flips the script...

I'm surprised this isn't more popular. 112 Tickets per event have been available for 2 hours now and not many have signed up. I expected to have trouble getting a spot via the "wish list"

9:00 Rebels: 20 players

9:00 Empire: 13 players

4:00 Rebels: 36 players

4:00 Empire: 28 players

Two major reasons why it's not more popular:

  • $80 is a lot of money even if it is good value
  • a lot of people already have schedules filled in

I'm signed up for the 9am event - Empire. Had the slot in my schedule and deffo want to give 2nd edition a go. It's gonna be some easy victories for some vets tho, i've only played a handful of 1.0 games ☺️

I’m signed up with Rebels at 9:00 so we may end up across the table from each other. IF they play Rebel vs Empire.....which would make more sense than a bunch of mirror matches.

Agreed. I had to shift my schedule around to make this work for me, but I’m in. 4pm Rebels. This should save me a little stress about waiting in lines Thursday morning, and I can make Friday my big “vendor hall tour” day.

I expect to be one of the easy victories too. I’ve been playing since the beginning, but am super rusty as I lost my game group to 1e fatigue, and I’m not really a tournament fan. I ran a free-for-all game at a game con a few weeks ago and flew my Boba Fett off the table about halfway through the game (it was like 1mm over, but still). Super rusty. :)

And it’s not like I’ll be able to get a lot of 2e practice games in before GenCon...

I want to do this bad enough that once a day I reconsider my schedule.

I just can’t. Responsibilities. I need to make some deliveries, a couple of pick ups, and cover a table in the vendor hall for lunch. My schedule has been largely locked in.

Makes sense. Bummer though. I have a large credit now after rearranging my schedule to get this to fit. Lol.
