Can a TO play in a tournament?

By drail14me, in X-Wing

I'm organizing the store championship for our small store which will by my first and the stores first official OP FFG event. I'm getting everything set up including a non-x-wing player to run the tournament that day. Since I have someone else handling sign-in and managing the swiss rounds, does that mean I can actually play in the tournament? Or, since I've organized it, do I need to bow out?

Don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to, the usual TO in my area plays in the tourneys he organizes all the time.

You should be able to play, official documentation calls for there to be a secondary judge if you need a judge for your games.

Just designate a second judge for your games.

Store Championships, even official ones, aren't considered premier events, so you can play as long as you have a secondary judge.

Play on!

And could that secondary judge also play? Kind of one of those deals where if my game has a judge question the secondary guy makes the decision and if his match has a question, I would decide?

That's how I always did it. Make sure you pick somebody you get along with as your secondary, because if you get matched up against each other you'll need to be able to agree on rulings.

Or designate a tertiary judge. :)

If we have an odd number of players I offer the player getting the bye a game. They still get the win and MoV for the bye, but they also get a game they would not otherwise have got. If anyone decided that they just wanted the break I’d not put pressure on them to play, but so far nobody ever has.

Totally. Just remember to be a TO first and a player second, and have a back up judge.

It depends on the tier of the tournament (laid out in the tournament rules). In my experience, nobody cares if you play as long as it's not a higher tier tournament.

Indeed!

Yup you can play, I am the TO for our local tournaments and always play. Like the others say, appoint someone to be the judge for your games, preferable someone that knows the rules well and is not a close friend to you.
A word of advice, the TO is like the dungeon master he is there to keep the game level high but lose to players.
You wont have much of a gaming scene if you win every tournament. Its not gonna be long before people start saying, why should I join the tournament to be stomped by the TO again. ?

Alternatively, try to encourage an odd number of players to show up, and then play against the Bye. You'll be able to fly a wacky list without consequeces, have a good time, and because you're the TO still get some loot at the end.

You can also pre-prepare a list of lesser-know quotes and mess with people all day, disrupting their concentration while wondering about which movie had the quote.

I am the local TO for our local stores comps and regularly play in them. For store championships it is perfectly fine as said above but I also nominate a tertiary judge just in case I end up playing the secondary judge :).

But a few helpful hints is to keep a "separate" distraction timer for when you are called away for judging reasons. This way your opponent is not disadvantaged as much because you can give them their fair extra time. I also always suggest not playing a "though intensive" list because your brain has to be able to snap in and out of your game easily.

This is exactly how I do it; that way if i have to break off to Judge it's not unfair on the person am playing

Agreed. I've actually tried playing some of the cinematic missions against the TO - it's quite refreshing to do stuff like political escort in the midst of a tournament.
