X Wing preview

By thespaceinvader, in X-Wing

im surprised they took this direction with biggs. It was the general assumption that xwings struggled with balance in v1 due to biggs' ability. So its really odd they are putting themselves in the exact same position again. Even more so as it seems buffed from previous.

They better pray balance doesnt get out of whack again.... (lets face it we know it will)

Good thing the app can fix it when balance is lost.

re: Biggs, this is toned down from the original one. It’s basically DTF from 1.0, so I think it’ll be fine. He can’t completely stop you from attacking anyone else.

Thane could be good with a missile carrier loaded with homing missiles, either risk a hard hit from the missile or get a card for Thane to turn into a crit.

He's a lot stronger than DtF, since he can pull hits or crits. If anything, this Biggs is improved over his pre-nerf 1.0 version, because now the opponent can misplay by not shooting at him.

You think that's bad? You can use Selflessness to turn another ship into a DTF!

There's a pretty significant difference between 1.0 Biggs (pre-nerf) and 2.0 Biggs: Biggs isn't getting attacked. He's just taking a hit or crit to cancel a hit or crit result on another ship.

Interesting implications here: First, he doesn't shift all of the damage. At most, it will be one.
Second, he doesn't roll any defense dice. Only the defending ship does. So if Biggs is escorting a VCX-100, for example, he doesn't get to roll 2 defense dice.
Third, his ability is used before the Neutralize Results step. He can't take on ion tokens, tractor tokens or jamming tokens on to himself. He can make it so they aren't applied to the defender by soaking a damage before they neutralize results with their defense dice, though (assuming he gets the total hits to be no more than 1 more than the total number of evades). This aspect might be a slight buff, actually.

There's another subtle distinction: 2.0 Biggs says "if you are in the attack arc." Not "if you can be targeted." So if the attacker is using a weapon that uses a bullseye arc, and Biggs isn't in it, he doesn't get to soak damage, even if he's in the front arc of the attacker. For that matter, it would also mean that if the attacker has a double-arc and Biggs isn't in the same one as the defender, he wouldn't get to soak the damage. (I'm thinking of the double-arc turrets here, though this seems less likely to come up, due to the 0-1 range restriction for Biggs' ability).
