Elves and no Magic

By Cynical Cat, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

About being narrow minded in the worlds geography, I don't mind, I'm already running an adventure that's taken the charaters to Kislev, the Moot and there on there way to Araby, Lustria, and Naggaroth. The only thing I want as far as books go is a beastiary, making stats on the fly is seldomly consitant (e.g. He hits you for 4 damage oh wait is that 5 can't remember, did he have 3 strength or 4) and making them ahead of time is a pain.

I agree w/ one thing, Panzer Kraken is an awesome name, No one one faces the octopus tank and lives!

forgot something, (and thease forums don't let me edit or reply to specific users for some reason)

@Mal reynolds and Peasekeeper, I've house ruled that the race requirement of certain careers can be ignored if you have a good enough reason, An example being that a Human Mercenary could advance to a bladedancer or swordmaster if he was very friendly w/ his teacher and his teacher was liberal enough to take a human student, The humans peers would eather view him with respect (not every day they see a human taking the time to learn their traditions), or view him as a disgrace to their order and that by a human even trying there art its staining its reputation. as long as it makes sense and more importently makes for a good story you can ignore any restriction.

I've Also added restrictions based on events and such rather then race, if you ever make a deal w/ chaos say good bye to witch hunter, get your name in the book of grudges, say goodbye to grudge bearer.

One character in our party is high elf gambler who was born and raised in the empire, he thus lives on a very weird line where the people of ulthuan shun his family for giving up there "superior" culture to live among humans, He's also shunned by racist which can be found any where there's witch hunters. Funniest part, as far taxes are conserned, He is a loyal imperial citizen. Because of his obscure character he counts as a human for all careers rather then an elf.

to Reidchapman:

That`s a very nice ruling. And it goes with the GM`s turf: If there is something you don`t like, fix it, change it, or rule it out.

Good gaming

Thanks for that Reid. It is a simple House Rule and works just fine. Everything about every RPG is suggested play...so if you need an Elven Wizard, let your elf be a Wizard...done and done. It was a breath of fresh air between you and Mal to read a touch of Sanity on these boards after so much negative complaints. The system will get complete, eventually there will be Elven Wizards...just wait and it will be worth it.

The game is fantastic and I'm glad to hear some people are enjoying it as much as I do with little effort to make it work the way we need to. Kudos to your player for coming up with a way to be an Elven Human...love how you bring the back story into mechanics. I always reward my players, mechanically, for the back story they create. How simple this would be if more people thought like the few of us who realize how easy it is to flex the rules to meet your needs.

I absolutely hate it when people complain about the lack of support for a roleplaying game, in my mind support is extra, food for thought. In dungeons and dragons: pick up the three core books and you'rr done, ran a half year long 3rd edition game with only the players handbook and my collection of dnd minis (cards have rules for playing them in the skirmish game or roleplaying game), In my (somewhat harsh) opinon, If your complaing about lack of support, chances are your not imaginative enough to play roleplaying games. I san understand the complaints of a wargamer whos game isn't backed, wargamers want things to be balanced perfectly or close enough to, but in roleplaying games balancing IMO is'nt important, story is. heck my PCs got two experience points in WHFRP for going though a two session dice without roling a single die for combat, they did the investigation so well and got the support of some lizardmen with some amazing die rolls and use of witty dialogue that they chased the chaos sorceror away by getting a skink to shoot his body gaurd in the throat with a poison dart. Best of all the villian escaped in a suitably evil fashion, by killing his other body gaurd to fuel some dark/blood teleport.

I was so surprised when I was refered to as reid, I'm so used to being called vampiric (vampiricmuffin is my alias for most things) or brain (brainsapelastic is my dawn of war 2 alias)

Why is the game limited to Reikland? Why don't we have Elven Mages and Dwarf Runesmiths? Why can't I play a two-headed ogre shaman-ninja-assassin with a jetpack? Well..... the answer is written on the box - "A game of grim and perilous adventure" ... as in "NOT a game of heroic high fantasy". Throughout all the material the authors try to set a certain tone - one that suits most parts of the Warhammer lore. They try to make the game setting more "down to earth" with real characters facing real threats - subtlety, treachery, corruption, temptation... as opposed to horde after horde of uber powerful foes which die by the dozen.

As the few sane people in this thread said, if you miss something - make it up! It certainly won't fit the fluff nor the general tone of the game but the ToA said it clearly - Make the world your own. You want a world of high adventure? Start a band of travelling High Elf Mages and Dwarven Runesmiths... add in a Halfling and a Lizardman for colour, maybe a Norse Barbarian too! Send them to help towns get rid of the dragon in the nearby dungeon, or to storm Karl Franz's castle alone (obliterating the rest of Altdorf on their way in)! If that's what makes your group happy - go for it! It's your game - it's just not Warhammer anymore.

On another note - imagine we had some 800 pages worth of books in the core set, to cover most of the Warhammer Fantasy world; all tiers of all careers with all the proper actions for those (without losing the diversity we now have); enough dice to make everyone happy; a complete bestiary; ...what else am I missing? With just that we would have had a box that's twice as big as the Core Box and thrice pricier ... oh yeah, a and it would come out about 4 years after WFRP2 has been discontinued. What a deal!! Does it sound realistic to any of you who moan that this or that is missing and that the game is incomplete?

Some people just can't be pleased.

There appears to be an elven wizard in the upper right-hand corner of the cover of "The Winds of Magic," as seen here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=1247

This leads me to believe that we don't have long to wait for rules about elven wizards.

Not to defend those who complain about the game lacking, for it do lack some important things. Let`s at least agree on that.

But a game such as warhammer, with its deep history, complex world, everything can`t be covered with the core-rules. there has to be things that are left out. its FFGs right to priority what it will produce next, based on sales statistics, purchasers demand etc.

What it is interesting for a GM (or player) is what else products can help me to enjoy the game more? Most GMs wants sourcebooks to better enhance or help them create interesting stories and campaigns for the players. The Players mostly wants expansions that gives them more choices and to strenghten their character, extra races, careers, spells and talents, that kind of things.

Obviously the game is lacking in materials and such, from the complains here on the forums, especially if you can compare it to second edition. But such comparisons are meaningless, since we rather are talking about a new warhammer roleplaying game rather than a new edition.

my player complained that he couldn`t grapple withou a stupid action card, as he could easily have done in the second edition. I told him that no you can`t as you couldn`t do double-strike either, dealing damage with both weapon. When hearing that he reasoned it wasn`t such a bad trade-off after all.

And that is what its about a trade-off. Some things was better in the previous edition and somethings are better in this game. The question is did the trade-off paid out? I think so, the new game is definetively an improvment. I am thrilled about it, despise its current lacking.

anyway Good gaming everyone

The problem with card based mechanics is homemade cards just don't compare in convenience, you can print your own cards but they won't look as good and also if you don't print them your card hand will consist of eight cards and an 8 and a half by 11 sheet of paper, kind of clumsy in comparison.

I'm okay with the cards supplied theonly thing I really want, Beastiary, More careers (especially more advanced and pet careers) and maybe just a huge box of standups, those little things are great and I'm all for anything that gives artists work.

He didn't have the stunt card?

Oh yeah he had. Good point by the way. Its too easy to ignore that excellent card. I will be sure to remind him about it next sessions

What do you mean my home made cards don't look as good... Ok I cheat I'm a graphic designer, but still these are not hard things to do a little photoshop and illustrator and your good to go. As for printing them, well if you have a quality printer and the correct stock you can get the same as the cards, even print them glossy. If you don't have one then your local print shop will probably be able to help you out with this, send them the pdf file and tell them how many you want, it might get a little pricy, but it will look good.

I'm just saying that's allot of work in comparison to in dnd where scribbles on some graph paper will do for house rules.

Although there aren't many cards I really want to make, maybe some spells but there's a supplement coming out for that.

BTW, I'm taking classes in graphic design and learning photoshop and what not, is that kind of trade common on thease forums.

the last sentence is that a question? if so not really, I know a few guys that do graphic designs and have made some awesome maps. other like Emirikol is a wizard at photoshop, doing wonderful things with Jon Stewart for example.

But no this forum I think is not running over by graphic designers and photoshop wizards. But we are a talented and fine group.

good gaming

as an elf, let me just say that i find it offensive that everyone thinks we are all "magical". typical.
