2.0 theorycraft: Imperial Superaces

By Rakaydos, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I originally mentioned this list as somethiing that would get hard countered even by a tournement-overcosted Luke Gunner, but now I'm wondering about it's own hypothetical tournamnet viability.

Now, bear in mind that we dont know point costs yet. But we have examples of Vader flying next to 4 blackcracks while heavilly equipped himself. And while we know Soontier Fell will pay an Init 6 tax, he's no Darth Vader.

So as a 2 ship list, I'm going to assume these two will have a slim but real Inititive bid, whatever upgrades they get. So how scary can they be?

Soontier Fel
Predator
Stealth device
Afterburners

Vader
Supernatural reflexes
Concussion missiles
Afterburners
Fire control system

As super arcdodgers, how do you think they will stand up to other probable meta threats, given what we know?

Even Soontier than other leading brands of Fel...

Soontir plus Stealth plus Afterburners gives you as close as you can currently get to Soontir now , giving you many green dice, double-reposition, evade (until afterburners run out of fuel) and focus (if you get a boresight). Theoretically, there's always a blind spot, and Soontir is probably best placed to find it.

Predator is nice, but I would always err on the side of caution with a TIE interceptor and would probably look to Elusive. Yes, it's not easy to recharge because you don't want Soontir doing red moves as a rule, but focus (if you boresight someone) plus a defensive reroll isn't bad, and more importantly, focus + evade + reroll one die is as near to three evades in the bin as makes no odds (something like 93% chance of evading a 3-hit attack, and 72% chance of evading a 4-hit attack).

Predator vs Elusive is essentially the equivalent to the 1.0 choice of whether you gave Soontir a stealth device or a targeting computer; you give up a touch of defence in return for giving him more teeth.

Fire Control System is pretty much an automatic choice given the interaction with Advanced Targeting Computer.

Supernatural Reflexes is good - giving Vader advanced sensors for barrel roll (plus other actions if you want to burn through force tokens like candy).

Afterburners is always good for a fighter because free boosts are the sort of thing high initiative aces thrive on.

Concussion missiles.....I'm more hesitant. It is a 4-dice attack (good) but the weapons ability is less likely to be useful on a TIE advanced because with Advanced Targeting Computer you're probably putting down a lot of face-up damage cards.

On the other hand, since you can't double tap the same target with cluster missiles twice, and with Advanced Targeting Computer/Fire Control System you're essentially hitting as hard as the missile with your primary weapon, it's probably delivering the same punch.

I would consider very strongly whether Proton Rockets might do you more good, though. Yes, boresight, but you've got initiative 6 supernatural reflexes Vader; if any one ship can reliably line up a boresight, it's him - and the rockets do now reach range 2.

Proton rockets is a good option- I was thinking concussions to give vader a more solid punch at range if needed, but Proton Rockets gives the same thing even more so, one time, closer in.

The Predator/Elusiveness question is an interestig one. It may come down to flying style and local meta- predator being better against large bases, elusivness against other dogfighting arced ships.

Concussions do have two attacks in the bin, whilst Proton Rockets are harder to line up, only get one shot, but should break smaller ships in two pretty reliably.

The latter is probably better for hunting big ships (easy to line up a shot), whilst the former is better in an ace-on-ace duel, giving Vader the range 3 punch he normally lacks. Again, it's a metagame choice, I suppose.
