Alternate Troops on weapons

By Poniatowski, in Star Wars: Legion

Ok, so I might have missed this in all of my excitement for new units..... As cool as it is having all of these different types of troops.... I am at the point where I need to consider a few things... The starter set basically sets you up for some starship battles, Tat and even Endor.... Die hard folks obviously won't be mixing snow and regular troopers..... So that begs the question..... will the new heavy units have other sculpts available for their use? Like, will we be able to get regular storm troopers to be our crew for the new heavy blaster?

Just curious... I just got into the game, but am looking further out.....

I don't think we will get alternate crew from FFG. As excited as I am for the guns, I would much prefer regular troopers.

We can always hope. I am a long time miniature gamer..... Legion has had me reconsider how I spend my money in the future.... I played another space miniature game for years and years.... Now that Legion is here, well.... that childhood hole has been filled.

Many people have been converting their models. For me, one of the major factors getting into FFG miniature games like X-wing and Armada was that I didn't have to build and paint a whole army. I spent far too much time doing that playing 40k. However, Star Wars is Star Wars and the scale of Legion means I won't be painting over 100 infantry models, 15 gun teams, 8 tanks, 6 walkers, 2 planes and the rest (Yes, as you guessed it I play Imperial Guard). But for Legion I plan to keep it basic. Other than the paint jobs on any Snowtrooper models which are more neutral and not just dedicated to snow environments I'm going to keep everything simple. Beyond playing the game (which is the primary consideration for me) they also look great on the shelf.

You could get some IA stormtroopers off Ebay and use them to swap for the Snowtroopers on the Eweb.

The 1.4's crew is wearing a poncho, painting it in a green camo will help the units blend in with the other trooper releases.

As for the E-Web, I'm going to be treating it the same way as actual Snowtroopers, painting them up more like an elite unit rather than just cold weather specialists. I'm also not painting the Stormtroopers in white either to be fair.

Buy an extra Stormtrooper box and you will probably have enough too convert any gun platforms. Odds are you won't play with 6 Stormtroopers with extra trooper + heavy weapons so you could scavenge som parts there.

For rebels, I think the troop design is so similar that a different paintjob Will be enough

Not to mention the whole thing of being a hodge podge military force. Having slightly different uniforms really fits that aesthetic.

I’m most likely going to be holding off on getting either of these until I can get a hold of crew that fits with my forces. Miniature wargaming is a a place where I like to indulge my OCD. Having Hoth troopers mixed with my standard troops would drive me nuts.

Yeah you'd just convert them. Get spares off eBay or something and swap the crews out. The spare artillery crew goes in your bits box along with any other leftover figures from the project. Never know what they'll come in handy for. Corpses, head swaps, etc. Maybe extensivelychop up a few extra stormtroopers to make an armor rack.

I'm going to be looking at whether or not the arms from the gunners will fit on regular Stormtrooper models like the kneeling HH-12 trooper so I can just replace the main bodies.

You don't necessarily have to buy a whole separate expansion box if you just want one or two individual trooper minis from a box-breaker site like Big Orbit or eBay.

Except since Legion's expansion boxes have exactly the bodies you need for an entire unit, there doesn't seem to be as much parting out of boxes as for other miniature games (at least not on eBay). It's not like 40k where you need 2-3 boxes to make a complete unit, and 2-4 boxes to get all the special weapons you can field in said unit.

I agree with several others, the Rebel Troopers on the 1.4 can easily be painted in other colors. Look at Sargent Melshi's look in Rogue One, particularly toward the beginning when his team breaks Jyn out of the Imperial work camp, his uniform is very reminiscent of the Hoth Troopers. In fact, he is wearing the exact same hat as they do (including the radio transceiver attached to one flap).

My OCD runs the other way. I want movie accurate before doing anything different. My son keeps trying to get me to do different paint jobs, like red stormtroopers, but I can't bring myself to do it until I have at least one movie accurate version.?

Now if I get a second unit of these, they will at least get a different paint job.

By knife, file, and putty, yea, all shall fit all.

You can usually make swaps like that happen pretty easily even if they don't fit. Depends more on posing that anything else. The photo of the mini at least looks promising for ease of conversion.

Dunno about where you are, but Big Orbit Games is selling individual figures, at least for the guys in the Core Set.

Thanks, and if I were in the UK/Europe, it might be worthwhile. As it stands, I'm disinclined to spend that much on conversion pieces, especially when a single body works out to at least 1/3 the price of a full box after shipping, conversion, and foreign transaction fees.

Get a couple of IA stormtroopers or Rebels to use as crew.
