the question I really wanted answered was how they are going to handle distribution of upgrades without having to buy minis in future waves. They hinted it in a few demo videos, but a more solid plan would be nice. my wallet isn't ready...

I'm not sure this was ever suggested?
What they said was that you don't have to buy (insert only 1 ship here) in order to get a specific upgrade (like the autothrusters expansion). All factions will have an expansion pack that comes with a particular upgrade card, allowing someone to only buy a single faction, and stay competitive.
They're still not in the business of selling card packs.

during the table demo at worlds they mentioned for future waves they are looking at an upgrade path where 1.0 players wouldn't have to buy the models... but they prefaced this by saying you may want to buy the models anyways due to the upgraded molds and paint jobs.
Essentially, if lets say A-wing 2.0 kit includes Tycho and Shera Bey pilots as well as Snap Shot and rotating lasers. The idea was that there would be a way to get those cards without actually buying models.

That also applies to extra pilots to ships that cane in the conversion kit- supposedly there's a non- minis way of aquiring those pilots and their cardboard.

It wasn't suggested, it was explicitly stated.
"There will be an upgrade path for existing players to get all of the cards that come with new waves without having to re-buy ships"
I am paraphrasing slightly because I am not about to watch 6+ hours of video to get the exact words, but statements to that effect have been said multiple times in different official sources from the announcement and surrounding video content (demo games, unboxing, etc.).

They did say they would do things based on the most recently released wave, so for wave one, there won't be any FO or Resistance because they wont be released yet.
Nothing yet, unfortunately....
i like the concept of smaller pool of pilots to choose from for some tournaments. will see lots of different lists which is gr8 for the game.

I'll believe it when I see an article announcing it. That seems like a really easy thing for management to say no to.

...but they said this several times on stream - almost twice each hour. It has to be true.
My prediction? I think the Wave Conversion packs will have one of each ship from the wave. Yes, they said you will not be required to buy out of faction, but I just don't see them able to support essentially double the SKU's: one for the product, and one for the matching conversion. By combining them into one kit, players can pick up one pack to give them all the components they need. Then, if a player still wants more, it's up to them whether to buy an expansion pack, or buy another Wave Conversion pack. It won't make everybody happy, but at least you aren't required to buy models that you already own. (Speaking of which, I predict that most models will be so cool, I'll be hard pressed not to buy them, even if I already have one from First Edition). After all, because of the distribution model in First Edition, most people have ships from more than one faction anyway, so they'll be able to make use of the content outside their primary faction.

They just barely managed to advertise Store Championships a week after they officially started.

I guess that means the Decimator is going to become significantly cheaper then? It's also a high HP cornerstone of you list type ship that did not get 4 attack and unlike the Falcon it lost all its arc dodging abilities.

I dunno, the Deci has a bunch of up and downs to it's new role as the Empire's Command Tank. I guess I could see it having a bit shaved off, but then having to dump points into expensive crew to reach its full potential.
The one thing I took away from the Q&A was their repeated reference to different game modes. As someone who is bored to tears by standard tournament games I was pleased to hear that the focus of the devs is diverse enough that it was mentioned three or four times. I like the idea of themed events like a Scarif event, and I like that standard tournament efficacy isn't the only thing they consider when developing cards.
