Closed topics

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Could the mods perhaps try to see whether the conflicts have died down before they rigorously close them? That Solo topic was doing absolutely fine again...

You mean apart from the debate on what does or doesn't qualify as murder?

Frankly, I'm surprised the topic didn't get locked sooner once that delightful nugget of conversation started up, and didn't seem to be showing any signs of easing up.

Besides which, forums aren't a democracy. Any and all posters are subject to the dictates of the forum operators, which can include closing threads or banning folks. Luckily, the company owned-and-operated forums are more of a benign oligarchy, but they've still got guidelines as to what is and isn't permissible, and most public forums (at least the one's I've been party to) tend to frown upon the topic of murder.

It also think it might have something to do with the new word that Desslok discovered is not actually filtered by the forum software.

I thought it had pretty much moved on from there.

I agree that forums need a mod (unfortunately) to stop the tantrums...

Or at least moved on from mean spirited arguments.

Well, I guess we could see if they've updated the censors. That'd be a clue.

[redacted for unnecessary swearing]

Nope! That's not it! Or at least not yet.

Maybe the programmers are fans of the previous iteration of Top Gear, in particular Captain Slow's preferred exclamation of dismay/irritation/alarm? :D

I'm sure the closing had nothing to do with the pirate avatar dude flinging obscene insults that seem to have got subsequently deleted by the moderators.

.... But I thought pirates were nice... whoa, this changes my whole outlook on life.

Nope..........☠️

I get why they close subjects but I have seen abuses from Mods in the past, which is why I hardly post here anymore. I’d rather move to a forum that appreciates discussion even if that discussion isn’t always one of agreement.

(PS some of the blocked content is language we see as tame in preschool rooms.)

Ah, that changes things

Looking through the locked thread, it doesn't appear to have any deleted content. Everything I and 2P51 said still seems to be there (which in itself is kind of weird moderation).

Dang, I just saw the movie last night, I'd been avoiding the thread and now it's closed. Another opportunity for tepid insights wasted!

They didn't close that thread because of you an me, and it isn't any mystery why they did. I don't need to name names. People that are actually curious can just look at avatars and people's posting history.

Some people show up to these forums and answer PC questions, give GMs advice, clarify rules, point out new ways to use the rules and think about them, post fan made resources, post inspirational artwork, and any number of things to promote RPGing in general, as well as FFG's products specifically.

Then there's the people, and their own posting histories show it clear as a bell, who in the majority just post in the spoiler threads and have a consistent pattern of only being around when there is one of the poop throwing fests, and they just magically happen to be right in the middle of it, but of course it's always someone else's fault not theirs.

I prefer to call out toxicity instead of accusing the people who call it out as being the real problem.

Throwing poop is throwing poop no matter who's poop it is.

My friends, come to the Ignore List Club - all are welcome! The internet is full of slung dung, and despite the efforts of many to keep it civil here, splatters happen. I can count on zero fingers the quality conversations I've missed as a result.

I've never liked ignore lists. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, so I like to think anyone can say something useful once.

I've never heard that saying before. I like it. Keeping my ignore list though, and stealing your saying......☠️

My problem with the ignore list is that the forum throws up a big ol "You have blocked this user! Click here to show their post!" message. And like a moth to a flame, I . . . well, I'm all like this:

Probably leads to your penchant for eating trash in the ocean waterbird........

Never used an ignore list in my life*, and have no plans to start.

*Knowingly, anyway. Used to be on a comics board where one of the mods thought it would be funny to unilaterally put someone he didn’t like on everyone’s ignore list. It didn’t go well, and cost the board at least one high-profile comics writer who was a member.

I thought that way once, too. Best of luck!

Eh. It's served me well enough for around 25 years. I won't lie and say I haven't been tempted to change my mind from time to time. Out in the world, I have to choose whether or not to interact with people who have the same right to the same space as I do. I don't have the luxury of putting a soundproof wall around them.
