Which Blue Ray set has the original theatrical release?

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Browsing Amazon is really confusing. Some say they have the theatrical release but in the reviews they that they don’t.

So SW nerds, which box set of blue ray should I get if I don’t care to watch the stupid “extra” scenes Lucas crammed in to the OT? (Looking at you especially stupid Hutt’s Palace musical number!)

As far as I know, Harmy's is the only way to the original theatrical releases on Blu Ray. I created my set a few years back, so I'm not even sure how easy or difficult it would be to put it together nowadays.

There's usually a person or two on eBay putting them together, if you're the lazy type (like myself) and don't want to put it together yourself.

Is there a theatrically release available for purchase?!

I have the DVDs that were released years ago, but the quality is terrible, it's forced letter box so the picture is also small. I still hope Disney will do a release, but so far... I don't know of any theatrical release officially on the market. I'm quite happy if I'm wrong though..

I don't think there is an official Blu-ray with the theatrical releases on it, only the DVDs with lower quality versions of the Laserdics. The only blu-rays out there with the theatrical films are the ones put together by the fans. Until Disney buys fox and gets the rights to ANH's distribution I doubt we will see them get a blu-ray release at all.

Well the Special Editions were released theatrically so what you are looking for are the original (Oscar winning) versions of the OT. They don’t not exist on blu-ray. As mentioned there are many fan based HD (and a UHD) restorations who advise you should own a blu-ray copy before downloading and the last official release was on DVD in letterbox (not anamorphic). The chances of an official HD release are very low. I recall Kathleen Kennedy in an interview looking quite confused when asked the question of whether they’d be released - the factor being the SE are the ‘directors’ cut and so why would she authorise a change back as it’s what George Lucas wanted. He’s even refused to hand a copy of the original cuts to the US National Film Preservation Board (and they rejected the copies of the SEs ? ). Who knows if there is even a negative of the original cuts anymore. Feels like a missed business opportunity not to release a dual version disc though.

I’m one of those lazy ones. I looked into putting one together but didn’t have the software, burner nor internet data bandwidth to download. Wish I could find one already put together. Any tips on finding one?

I do have the DVD version of the theatrical release. It’s all I watch when I turn to the OT.

This is the guy I got mine from:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-Despecialized-Original-Trilogy-Blu-ray-Set-w-Special-Features/263745899066?hash=item3d687b0a3a:g:7PQAAOSwsTdaqDfC

but, my listing also had a disc for the Holiday Special, and one about Star Tours (both DVDs).

Thanks. This post made me give the downloads another try. The instructions are easy to follow and I was able to get them to start to download but my internet just can't handle the file size. I have to tether to a cell phone for internet on my laptop. I guess you're pleased with your copy?

I am. And the price seems to have come down quite a bit since the time I got mine.

How the heck is the guy selling these and not getting sued? That being said I’d love a copy of these because I don’t like Lucas’s tinkered mess. The originals were far from perfect but those are my Star Wars movies.

Got me... that's why I jumped on ordering a set before he disappeared. :D

Fox seems to have accepted Disney's offer so we will likely see Blu-rays of the films in the near future then considering Disney has the rights to the distribution of ANH now. Hopefully if they make new Blue-rays they will include theatrical versions of the films.
