Store Championship rules/etiquette?

By drail14me, in X-Wing

In a store championship, can you proxie upgrade cards?

Also, what is the etiquette involved in playing in a store championship that is not your normal store or even a store you’ve visited before ie, is it accepted to go on other people turf?

No Proxies.

Have fun and treat everyone with respect.

proxie, no. you're supposed to have all the official cards when playing in a FFG event. Check with the TO.

Etiquette? not sure what you're looking for here. being polite is always a good plan.

If you're worried about competing in a Store Championship at a store that isn't your true "home store", don't. Everyone is welcome and the store wants you there!

Thanks. That’s what I was wondering. I’d like to play in as many as I can just for the playing experience but didn’t want to step on someone else’s turf.

FWIW, some Store Championships don't particularly care if you proxy.

In my area, with everyone wearing their squadron shirts at events if you were an outsider you might think there would be problems, but the guys from San Diego to the guys from the Bay area, the High Desert, the Valley and everywhere in between all get along.

In fact, seeing people from other stores and areas that don't come out is a boon. There's a lot of sharing of ideas, whether it's how to build a squad, setting up rocks, and admiring paint schemes. And there's a lot of "Man! Where have you been? You need to call me up for a game." that's commonly heard. My experience has been largely positive, so DO go. It's a great experience for the friends you make, the prizes you might win, and the stories you'll share. Try not to be a Lone Wolf and you'll really get the most out of it.

Don't shame/insult/whine at people because you think their list is cheap/broken/bad. Basically if you don't have something nice to say about your opponent's list, don't comment at all. Save that stuff for the drive home or the forums.

It might seem harmless, but people take personal pride in the lists they choose to fly, and it's not fun to have somebody raking you over the coals for choosing the ships/cards that you did, even if your opinions are possibly true.

Another one is if you miss an opportunity to use an effect at the correct timing, don't beg your opponent to let you take it retroactively. They will probably just tell you to do it, and if so great, but begging for take-backs just puts your opponent in the difficult position of feeling like a jerk or hurting their own chances to win because of your mistake.

Also, if you need cards, don't be afraid to ask people at the tournament if you can borrow for the day. There are always generous people who are happy to lend out their extra cards to people who need them. It helps to ask ahead of time online so people can know to bring whatever cards you need to borrow.

The UK has a more regular community than the US due to the closer proximity - everyone gets out to all sorts of stores. It's encouraged to go to other peoples stores and try and steal their prizes whilst they defend their turf - lots of good natured ribbing and challenges. Excellent fun.

Store Championship and up its fairly expected that people will travel. Honestly unless the store is WAY out in the middle of nowhere I'd be surprised to not see at least a couple out of towners for any given event.

You should assume that you will only be able to play a list you actually own all the cards for. You might be able to get away with a proxies or borrowing something you're missing at the right location but my recommendation would be to assume not going in.

Try to minimize dispute fatalities.

That may be true in many stores, but it can vary a lot. If you're entering an official tournament, it's respectful to your opponents to uphold your end of the rules and bring legal components.

In my last Store Championship of 2017, my cards somehow disappeared after having set them out and walking away to visit with some friends. I frantically looked for them to no avail. Fortunately I had doubles of most of my cards, and my first opponent (shout out to Mike Nordell) covered the rest.

I found them between matches. They apparently slipped off my carrying case and into a box that was full of Warhammer terrain that the shop kept under their tables.

In short, people at the Store Champs are more likely to help than to hinder. Especially this season, I wouldn't expect too many to be out for blood, considering that 1st edition is on its way out.

I've played a few, and no-one is territorial. Play fair, don't feel pressured to allow take-backs of mistakes or forgotten actions if you don't want to. Don't gloat over bad dice/mistakes, shake hands before and after the game, usual stuff.

I've only had one person give me any grief; he would wait until I revealled a dial to say he hadn't finished his previous actions. I fixed that by asking if he was finished after every single dial. He got the hint :P

Remember, this ISN'T a 40K tournament :)

Or use an illegal list... or use Attack Wing components...

Ok they might care but can be... persuaded.

But don’t tell them about the list.

A lot of places don’t know that Attack Wing templates are not identical to X-Wing templates. We didn’t until earlier this year.

I didn’t use the templates. Just the tokens, dial fronts, and dice.

Get into their heads.

1) eat a large bean burritos for dinner the night before, eat a lot of eggs for breakfast day of.

2) wear the same shirt everyday for a week before.

3) showering? LOL that’s for losers.

4) Deodorant might cause cancer. Better not risk it.

This way you’re sure to have them thinking about things other than X wing.

I’d say good luck, but in my experience, there’s no such thing. Luck is what you make of it.

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, hear the lamentations of their women.

Yeah, I never felt any remorse for using the "is that your dice on the floor?" gambit during a game of 40K.

Proxies are not allowed but most places are friendly and will often help you out with borrowed cards of you ask in advance. It’s fully ok to go play at not your local; it’s all love! Other than the very occasional sourpuss; everyone’s there just to play spaceships and have fun. Go enjoy it!
