Where are my Cannons and Turrets?

By Force Majeure, in X-Wing

Yeah I’m also eager to see the new iteration of Autoblaster, which should come with the new B-Wing. I had gotten so good at keeping Keyan stressed at range 1 and blasting away.

I also desperately want to be able to fly a squad of B-Wings that have the FACTORY STANDARD complement of Autoblaster, Ion, and Heavy Laser cannon. These things ought to be either a jackhammer or a Swiss Army knife; if they can’t double-tap, they should at least get extra options for free.

I’m holding out hope that we’ll see some provision in the squad builder, either in a flat cannon discount or wording such as “if you equip a cannon upgrade, you may equip an additional cannon upgrade of equal or fewer squad points for free”. TBH, something the B-Wing should have had since day one. And it HAS to have 2 if not 3 cannon slots.

Why should they get them for free?

No ship gets their standard loadout for free. The gunboat doesn't come with a complement of free cannons. The Defender doesn't have ion cannons included. Whenever there is a turret slot on a ship, it is the factory standard turret, but it is never free.

I think the Defender and the B-wing should get a double tap, but they shouldn't get the upgrades for free.

Besides, the B-wing has a beefy 3 dice primary, which normally it wouldn't. So maybe that's one of those cannons.

In the cases of the gunboat, the old TIE/D, and the turret upgrade in general, it is almost always suboptimal to fly them without the upgrades that bring it to its standard loadout.

On the other hand, in the case of the B-Wing, it has almost always been suboptimal to fly it with the upgrades that bring it to its standard loadout. The B-Wing has always been used as a super-efficient jouster, and never has it been seen an ideal cannon platform. This is my issue.

Edit: Simply having the cannon slot has historically done almost nothing for a ship unless there was a mechanic that interacted with the cannon slot in an interesting way (TIE/D, Gunboat, IG88B, etc.) or unless the primary attack was very poor to start out with (M3-A). The B-Wing has neither of those things going for it.

That is an argument for adding a ship ability, not an argument for free upgrades. Neither will happen, so why settle for the worse?
