(UK Event) Stars Are Right - 25th/01/09

By Eryx_UK, in CoC General Discussion

A man dying of an unknown malady. A curious Egyptian artifact.
An abandoned house on the edge of Dunwich, and a malevolent horror that stalks the night.

It can only mean... my venue's first Call of Cthulhu tournament of 2009!

Gamers,
St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Sunday 25th January 2009.
1pm start. 5:30pm finish.

* 3 card limit.
* All sets/expansions accepted.
* Each player builds a story deck of 12 different story cards of their choice.
* Each round is a best of three. Both players will have a chance to play their story deck.
* Three or four rounds depending on turnout and time.

£2 entry, with the winner recieveing a £10 Gamers voucher (in store credit).

Hope to see some of you there.

I am deffinatly stealing this idea. I wish I was there, I would play!

The build your own story deck idea is something I've done since I first started running CoC tournaments a few years back. It has prooved very popular.

Another idea that has also proved popular is to use a single story deck containing all stories, but they are played face down and when you win you have to enact the effect regardless. Thats a fun one.

Overall, this is the first CoC event I've run in almost a year. I'm hoping that we can get some extra bodies down for it.

I hope no one objects if I give this a small friendly bump.

So far looks like I've got 4-5 of the local regular players turning up, but no one for further afield. sad.gif But I do plan on making these a monthly event so maybe see new folks down the road.

I will certainly be there. I am looking forward to seeing the old gang and trying out this new fangled three card limit. If there are any new or old players thinking about making the trip, you really would be most welcome.

Can I object on purely selfish grounds, since I can't get there and don't need reminding of it gui%C3%B1o.gif

Sounds like an excellent event, hope it goes well!

Sounds like a perfectly fair reason to object. happy.gif

Hopefully, since I plan to start making monthly CoC events again, that we may see you some time?

Sadly, not unless there are some major changes to the British public transport infrastructure and/or my income dramatically improves! Only non West Yorkshire event I will be certain to get to is Games Expo 2009 in Birmingham, but if enough board members can make that one, should we try a small 'tournament' there? Or at least a meeting.....

I know the feeling since I don't drive. My venue might be going there this year, if so I may be able to tag along. If so I'll let you know.

Tempting, but it's bad date for me I'm afraid preocupado.gif

I'm going to be running monthly events from here on in (which I will post up on these forums), so hopefully we may yet see you?

Six cultists arrived at today to raise their dark masters from the depths of the sea and unknowable dimensions. The final standings were:

1st place: Andy "Nomad" Clarke - Hastur/Conspiracy/Rush.

2nd place: Marko Thomas - Hastur Insanity Control.

3rd place: Ian Turner - Cthulhu/Nodens deck.

4th place: Darren Davis - Cthulhu/Yog Tzulscha based Cultist deck.

5th place: Luke Townsend - Cthulhu/Agency combat deck.

6th place: Colin "Big Show" Goodman - LCG only Misk/Yog.

Congrats to Nomad for his well deserved win! happy.gif

Well done, Andrew!

Congratulations to winner and all. Conspiracies wins a tournament.

congrats, andrew!

you have earned a spot for the next stahleck event, including a free ride from the train station to the castle ;-)

Hey, thanks guys.

It was great to see so many old faces and a few new ones, a big thank you to Colin for hosting. It was also a chance to test out my Hastur Conspiracy Rush Deck, a sort of yellow version of the deck Tuomas might remember from when we played at Stahleck. It proved a fun deck, but I really need to find a way of getting some investigation icons into it to speed it up, but on the plus side Aspiring Artist really proved its worth and provided me with plenty of crazed cultists for my human wave assaults.

Talking of Stahleck 2009, count me in! Thanks for your kind offer of a lift to the castle Wolfgang, that mountain just doesn't get any smaller happy.gif

It was good to have you back. Next event is up so I hope to see you for that. Marko is already plotting ways to make his deck better. sorpresa.gif

I remember you were playing a Syndicate rush deck, but can't recall a Hastur one... There was a lot going on, though, so it might have just slipped away from my mind. If I may ask a little about your deck, I assume the basis is lots of small characters and some disruption? Don't give us all the details however, it's more fun to build the decks by oneself. ;)

Count me in too. I'm glad to know Thorondor will be hosting a good tournament regardless of FFG's new format plans.

Sounds like an intriguing concept... :D Well done Andrew!

You're right, I played a Syndicate Conspiracy Rush deck at Stahleck. This deck used some of the same elements as that one, but with Hastur as the chosen faction. In terms of its build, yes plenty of cheap low cost characters to try and get some early tokens, but I went with some insanity effects to try and clear the way to the stories later on. I like the idea of using hand disruption though, perhaps I will try that as an alternative next time.

Incidentally, great to hear you will be at the next Stahleck, I will have to start doing some serious deckbuilding in preparation! As far as rotation goes, I entirely agree. Whilst I hope FFG won't make the game white border only, with my local group and Thorondor being old format loyalists, I'm not losing any sleep.
