One problem with spam, besides being a bit dull, is that you can run out of cover quite quickly, even with 25% of the surface covered. It's not so much a problem with stormtroopers but I imagine rebels will start taking casualties quite quickly and once they do they can't put out very much damage besides hoping for critical hits.
It depends on the table of course.
