2.0 Gonk Unlimited!!

By K13R4N, in X-Wing

Is it me or is Gonk going to be the only unlimited Regen (Mirranda doesn't count as its restricted at 1) in the game which could potentially be dangerously close to the fence of brokenness. I mean I'm not saying it will be OP as it takes 2 actions which hurts but potentially if FFG isn't careful and mistakes are made and they introduce a card tht let's you use Gonk as well as your focus action we could be in trouble.

I very much doubt it but would be interesting to see a meta around Gonk... I mean What the Fudge!

As far as we know, you can equip 2 Gonks. One recharges the shield, while the other refills its charge.

Panic button and collective suicides this way ===>

Why would you want two? It's two actions to recharge a shield regardless of the number of gonks on a ship.

Just trying to foster panic.

On second thought, by charging several Gonks at the start of the game, you could have later a kind of 'burst' regeneration.

Gonk will be even worse in 2.0 than it is now. Actions will be more valuable, so spending 2 actions to regen 1 shield will not worth it.

With actions being so important, and harder to multiply, I don't see Gonk being a problem.

I loved Gonk in 1e, so the fact that it is potentially endless regen is still appealing to me. Also, didn't the faction requirement go away? Gonk takes a lot of actions, yes, but if you can mold your playstyle and approach to match it the droid always pays back its value in points.

You know, I just realized, if Gonk really is losing his faction restrictions, the TIE phantom could potentially have regenerating shields. That could be nuts. De-Cloak, get a few shots off, Cloak, then run away and regen for a few rounds.

This is brilliant. I bet it won't be cheap. The regen low ps phantom may be a Intimidating thing .

GONK

An x-wing story

Out of the blackness of space a TIE phantom appears. A flurry of deadly laser bolts flood the void between it and the lone smuggler. The deflector shields of the YT strain as they are pushed beyond their limits. Pieces of hull chip away... The gunner quickly turns the turret and responds in kind. The agile ship manages to dodge a few shots, and starts cloaking again, but not before the gunner manages to get a hit.

The Phantom's shields melt away immediately, but the cloaking finished. Space seems empty again. The hyperdrive is damaged, the YT cannot escape... And the TIE is still about somewhere.

Suddenly a strange sound echoes between the ships destroyed earlier in the battle. GONK!

The YT flies around, her pilot is panicked. He doesn't know where the phantom has gone. He tries reverting all power to the engines. If he can stall enough, the hyperdrive will be fixed and he escapes with his prize intact. GONK!

Minutes pass flying around the empty debris, the Gunner's itchy fingers fire at everything even remotely triangular... But the cannons keep hitting pieces of destroyed ships. GONK!

Hyperdrive is almost done. The calculations are getting ready. A few more seconds. GONK!

Then, dead ahead, space opens up and a green death fills the eyes of the smuggler. The gunner attacks immediately, but the phantom has regained all its shields, deflecting the crimson bolts with ease. The TIE-s cannons rip the YT apart.

GONK

I just have images of a GONK in a TIE Pilot helmet, floating otherwise naked in space becasue the cloaking device doesn't work properly on him for some reason.

...the mere mention of that noise is enough to send shivers down an ace pilot's spine.

GONK

Hilarious ? Nicely done ;)

It's also worth noting that this Gonk works a bit differently to the old one - you used to be able to bank a bunch of shields in the first few rounds of the game, then draw them off when you need them to make it more efficient. With the charge mechanic having a ceiling of 1 for 2nd edition Gonk it should keep him under control.

I think Gonk will be good only on a ship that can either get 2 actions regularly or can run away without using their actions for boost/br. So far I think only Lando fits the bill.

I will run Gonks on everything, all hail the Gonk!

That kinda depends on how many points Gonk is !

Chopper + Elusive = Unlimited regen

So at the start of the game, you could slow-roll and charge up two gonks? Wow, that's almost as good as having an R2 unit!

Kidding aside, it could actually be decent to have one Gonk which you can recharge if you can setup non-combat turns. Two Gonks is a Gonk too much.

HERESY!!

Can you imagine how irritating it would be flying a Phantom with a Gonk droid crammed in the cockpit with you? Just insistently gonking.

That's why crews should have been splitted between copilots and passengers / technical staff.
