Will this work for a quick character creation ? advise needed and appreciated.

Hi,

So on Saturday I am running my first game under this system, I want the players to have some hand in creating a character but at the same time want it to go quickly. The issue i have is that with some of the players they will want to read all the action card before picking ( could take hours !).
So heres my plan :

Deal 3 character sheets and let them pick one.

Pick a race based on the ones relevant to the career they have chosen.

Generate stats as usual ( this step seems quite easy and quick)

Deal them double the number of action cards and let them keep the number allowed from character creation. I have sorted the action cards so they can pick melee or ranged etc. This will help focus their choice but not limit it to much ( I hope)

Deal double the number of talents ( again separated into types) and let them keep the allowed number as a result character creation.

But...

The issue i have is what do i do about equipment ? do i just bite the bullet and let them pick or is there a quicker way to do this. We are playing our first session mainly to learn the rules so its possible we wont keep the characters. But i don't want someone to pick double strike and then find themselves with only one weapon ( for example).

Please let me know if you think this approach would work and any solutions you may have for buying equipment.

Thanks

I think that would work, but I think you should be generous with letting them swap actions over the course of the game (if you're playing long term) when they get a clearer idea of what they want. No one likes to buy stuff they don't want, and while it's a decent compromise to deal out cards quickly, you shouldn't penalise them long term for your desire to get things moving.

You could just let the wealth points they spend guide you re equipment. If they spend a lot be generous, if they don't spend many, then be mean. But really, if someone has the action, you should definitely let them have the required equipment for it, unless you have an idea how they might have lost it.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback, I had thought that after the first session, we could review the action cards and give the players a chance to change out any they didn't want, your advise has backs that up so i will offer that. I am also thinking that if anyone wants to create a new player they can, as once again they should have a clearer idea of how the system works and want they want.

I am not too worried about encumbrance, so i think your right ill look at the wealth level and let them equip according to actions

I think it will work fine, as long as you're allowing them to switch actions as they grow more accustomed with the system.

Hmm, I'm not sure I agree. Sure the wealth points can be used as a guide, but it should be noted that for some action cards you will not be able to start with the needed weapons (e.g. Twin shot, a PC cannot really afford to start with one pistol, let alone two). Firearms or repeating crossbows are just too expensive, even if you start at the highest level of wealth.

If you give them the starting equipment along with the gold they get it should be very quick to let them buy any extra weapons they might need or want. You can even limit this and say that they may only buy an extra handweapon, crossbow or dagger (the cost/stats for those three you can write down somewhere in advance to avoid having to find the table in the book.

Hi Gruntl

When you say i should give them the starting eqiuipment, are you referring to the list of items your wealth level gives you? and then add to that?

If so i like that idea

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. Giving them the wealth based starting equipment will be enough in most cases, you could then prepare a short list of available items that they can buy for the gold (easy enough to give this an in-game explanation, maybe the location where they start only have a small selection of gear to sell). I'd probably include a shield and maybe some one or two types of armor in the short list as well.

Actually, if you want to avoid it altogether, just house rule that they all start as poor. demonio.gif
