I've seen a few discussions on this from before the game released and wave1 expansions were known. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this now?

If you had just bought the core set for legion and were looking to get towards a 800pt army of both factions (playing with family so I need to buy both). Do you think a 2nd core set is worth buying?

I'm thinking in time we'd get the AT-ST and maybe landspeeder and an extra commander for each side. However it'd be nice to do some full point battles in the mean time. We're going to want more dice, speeder bikes and an AT-RT which the 2nd core set would cover rather than buying individually. That would also provide 2 extra units of troopers per faction. Looking at the individual costs $25 for speeders bikes, $25 for AT-RT, $15 dice That's $65 before you consider the two extra units of troopers per faction in the core set.

Whilst longer term we might not end up running 4 stormtrooper/rebel units, perhaps having 3 + a specialist units, that 3rd unit for each side would still amount to $50 in expansions.

It seems at least as far as buying base trooper expansions goes, especially with wanting to cover both factions, the value is still there for buying a 2nd core set.

Only downside I can see is you miss out on some upgrade cards but I believe they can be picked up in other expansions such as fleet/snow troopers or commando's? Are there cards in the AT-RT or speeder bike set that are not covered in other sets (such as AT-ST/Landspeeder)?

so, a 2nd core set is ABSOLUTELY worth buying for the following reasons -

• 2nd set of movement and range tools which, if you're playing at home with family, is always easier than sharing back and forth
• Enough dice to (mostly) play without too much re-rolling
• if you total up the contents, they are cheaper when bought with the core than separately - getting the troops alone would be $60, $20 each for the AT-RT & 74z's
• you can sell excess stuff on via eBay and mitigate the cost (so, you can sell your Luke & Vader on eBay, or the 74z's if you don't want 4 of them)

If you're just playing one faction the 2 x Core's gives you a lot of stuff you might not want but if you're planning on making equal armies of both sizes (as I am), 2 x Core's a steal.

It’s worth it. There’s a few older threads that did all the math. Saves considerable money and, thus far, FFG staying true to word that all cards available to both sides in expansions.

I also play both factions with family. I had originally planned on just getting one core and getting to 800 points with the other releases but quickly found that this still didn't allow for a lot of options. Considering that three expansions plus dice are the same cost as a core, it made more sense to just get a second core. The additional movement tools and range rulers were a nice addition as well. I was originally going to ebay a set of each trooper unit but changed my mind as I started building squads. It also made me feel more comfortable to have my son paint up some of the "extra" units.*

The extra core has been well worth the cost. I was initially short some upgrades, such as Impact Grenades, but those have shown up in other expansions, so I don't feel like I'm missing out now.

*My vision is to have my personal army be universe accurate. My son wants to be creative. He can now paint up a creative Vader/Luke and some visually unique units while I can still my movie accurate army.

Definitely get a second one! Its such a great deal when you break it down, and Amazon has them for $71 last I checked. 3 units alone is $75. There's the deal right there

While you might not run 4 core set troopers in your 800 point list, once more expansions come out, those will still be nice to have if you ever wanted to play higher point games. Plus if you're ever playing someone who is new to the game and only has core set stuff, you can lend them an extra unit or two so they can run points that's closer to the standard amount.

It seems that with there only being a few upgrades, we'll see impact and grappling hooks in a few more expansions still. Plus if you're buying into both factions, you'll be fine on getting those as expansions come out. But from what I've played and seen so far, those upgrades aren't a massive game changer, good to have but you'll be fine without them for awhile.

Getting a second core isn't even a consideration. It is a must. Now getting that 3rd core is something you could pass on, though many decided to do so when the game first came out. At this point you can do 2 cores, Veers, Leia, Snowtroopers and Fleet troopers and have a good mix to play with.

From experience, yes two cores is best. As an added bonus, you have a spare of each commander for customization.

If you are playing both factions the 2nd core is an easy yes. The value is great and rebel troopers and stormtroopers are mainstays of most armies.

The separate boxes don't offer anything you can't get in the fleet and snow trooper expansions....which your getting

The second dice pack is basically mandatory and depending how you look at it, it is free in the core box.

Thanks for the advice. It confirmed my feelings on this and I've a 2nd core set on the way :)

Not to mention spare measuring sticks/movement tools. Not as uniformly useful as having enough dice to roll most attacks, but still nice to have on hand.

Plus, the core set is currently the only way to get copies of concussion grenades and targeting scopes.

You need 2 cores for the dice. The rest is just bonus. I have 2 cores and an extra dice pack and still do not have enough dice to roll at once if my flame-thrower ATRT attacks a full squad of troops!?

This is absolutely the way to go..... especially if you have plans for both factions... more bang for your buck all around..... just costing out the separate items shows what a great deal this is.. AND, the troops you get are the most common.... rebels and stormtroopers..... Now, if you plan to do Hoth or something else.. then you might want to think about your purchases.... but heck... getting 2 sets of the rules, dice, movement and range sticks is almost worth it alone....

I am starting with Endor..... so these are/were perfect for me.

The question is not "2nd Core Set when running both factions?" but "3rd Core Set when running both factions?".

You will absolutely need a 2nd set of dice, the 2nd set of measuring instruments is great, the 2nd set of barricades is great, the 2nd set of tokens is good too, and you will definitely need all the units from that 2nd box (except for Vader and Luke).

The 3rd core set is there just for the Troopers and vehicles. Leia + 3 x core box Rebels is a good army. Veers + 3 x core box Empire is a good army, too. This is still a bargain right now, but will become obsolete sooner or later, when more stuff is released.
