Newbie don’t know what to buy

By mr.thomasschmidt, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi. I would like to know from anyone who plays both campaign and skirmish and have all or most of expansions.

I wanna buy this game and get a kind of classic Star Wars feel both regarding the campaign game and the skirmish game. I’m gonna play casual’ish with a friend. The price tag if I’m gonna buy everything is just not realistic. So in order to get a fairly balanced game what should I invest in?
I was thinking the main game cause. Then over time every big box expansion? And I was thinking the main characters from episode 4-6 like
R2D2/C3PO
Lando
Leia
Solo
Chewie
Luke
Obi wan
Maul
The emperor
Jabba
Guido
Bobba Fet
What packs do I need in addition to keep the game interesting and balanced?

For campaign play, the core box is really all you need to have a good experience. With the core you have access to the core campaign as well as the coop app campaign. However, if you don't like the idea of using cardboard tokens for some of the allies and villains, you might consider buying all of the wave 1 packs:

  • Chewbacca
  • General Weiss
  • Han Solo
  • IG88
  • Rebel Saboteurs
  • Rebel Troopers
  • Royal Guard Champion

However, in terms of pure value for campaign play, the big box expansions are probably your best bet - a lot of figures and they give you more full length campaigns to play (obviously they require the Core box). Jabba's Realm is considered by many to be the best expansion campaign but I also have had a lot of fun playing both Return to Hoth and Heart of the Empire.

I haven't played a lot of skirmish so I can't really speak to that but I own all of the small box and big box expansions (in addition to a few blister packs) which have provided hundreds hours of entertainment.

Uhhh, who?

Did we get a Jersey Shore expansion with Darth Snookie? :P

Yeah, I'd listen to what @machfalcon says.

In addition, if you want to play skirmish, think about what faction you want. That helps determine what expansions to get a lot. For instance, Jabba's Realm is a big one for Mercenaries.

Finally, it sounds like you already have a good idea for the "feel" that you want, judging by the units you've listed that you're interested in.

If you want to see how they perform, boardwars has a pretty good analysis of each pack.

Start with the core box.

Even if you don't want to play with tokens for some of the figures, you are not going to see all of them during one campaign, so you can buy the wave 1 figure packs only if they actually get used. Depending on how often you play, for example once a week, you have one week to get the required figure pack if the rebel players choose their side mission at the end of a session and not at the start. (And you know the next story mission two weeks in advance for the villain packs.)

Core box only and you'll be fine for few months. It's around 100 hours of gaming playing campaign, skirmish and app.

This is true, you can get a ton of play out of just the core box.

However, just as a counterpoint- I've been really glad that I snatched up everything available when I first started my collection and have kept up ever since.

Things tend to mix pretty well, especially in campaign, and the sheer variety of components has kept things very fresh still, even through roughly 7 campaigns now (3 of which were the core campaign, augmented with other waves available).

Skirmish is pretty actually pretty balanced right now, but as far as the campaign is concerned, the game is not balanced and no amount of additional components will fix that. Some missions are designed to be harder for the Rebels than others , and there are certain flaws in the reward system of the Core Box that can lead to one side running away with the whole campaign. There are some house rules that you can institute for the Core Box, and the last two expansions (Jabba's Realm and Heart of the Empire) have changed the reward system to address this, but only for those campaigns.

Get the Core Box and few ally packs. Han, Chewie, Boba Fett, and maybe the Rebel Troopers or Hired Guns to round things out. Then pick up some of the big boxes. Those tend to have the better and more diverse heroes in them anyway.

Also, get at least one more person if you want to play campaign. Or try the app.

I'm sure the very first time you spoiled most of the campaign content just because of rules misinterpretation. We all did unless you had in party someone with deep knowledge of this game. I'm happy I played at least 3 times core campaign before approaching my first expansion. I admit that at my 10+ campaign using Jabba's Realm I found one case where I used to apply wrong ruling. I can say that to my experience, all the cases of campaign snowballing I've seen were due to rules misinterpretation. I suggest to use the core as a playground as long as possible, to get familiar with complexity of this game before stepping forward.

Before doing this double check time period limitations. Some packs can't be used in all campaigns. Han, Chewie and rebel troopers are definitely ok with core. Not sure about the other ones mentioned.

For sure- I was about 3 core campaigns deep before we moved on to Hoth (and by that time, knew the rules and strategies much better).

I'm just saying, having access to some of the additional side missions, allies, open groups, heroes, and classes helped keep our first three campaigns from becoming too repetitive.

Don't buy Twin Shadows. It has ZERO value for skirmish and I heard, the campaign is not good either.

Bespin Gambit at least has a little value, but would be the last box to buy. I wouldn't buy it at all, if I started IA today.

Return to Hoth has some must have Command Cards and Upgrade Cards for competitive tournament play. But here is no recommendation for casual play.

Jabba's Realm is the most valuable box (must have), followed directly by Heart of the Empire (strong recommendation).

Negation and that's it :) FFG should include this somewhere else.

If you want to play skirmish I'd recommend a Jawa for Mercs as well as Hera, Rangers and up to three Smugglers for Rebels.

Targeting Computer and Unshakable.

The heroes are also pretty bad.

However, a few of the items in the expansion are some of the best items in the game. EE-3 Carbine is the best Tier 2 ranged weapon and Plasma Cell is one of the best ranged weapon attachments. Also, Gaffi Stick which can be combined with Vibrogenerator to be the most cost to damage efficient weapon combination.

Used well into T3 for our last campaign.

I play almost exclusively skirmish and this is a good assessment. Also, Greedo.

... because Greedo is awesome.
