Does an upgrade card with a white action replace or add to a red action?

By sirjorj, in X-Wing

We have seen that Engine Upgrade now REQUIRES a red boost and ADDS a white boost. There are cards with this same idea for barrel roll and coordinate as well. Does anyone know if this turns the red action white or adds a white action in addition to the red one? I know this is probably a super fringe case, but there are some pilots that benefit from stress, so this may be relevant. The card (as written) looks like it would add a white action in addition to the required red one. However, they may be a hard rule that you can only have each action in your bar once (excluding linked actions) so it would override the red one.

I believe it just adds the option.

I don't think they have confirmed this anywhere yet. You will probably have to wait for rules or some kind of AMA session

I have a feeling the answer is you must have a red single action in order to fulfill the reuirements of the upgrade. I say this because there are many ships out there that have a white single action with a red chained version of it. I don’t think we’ve seen any cases of the second action in a chained action being white. FFG is probably trying to limit / control action economy to keep power creep from happening like it eventually did in verison one. But, the question certainly warrants being asked. While we’re at it, how about finding out if an upgrade of this kind may be taken by a ship that only has the action as a second action in a chain? I believe there is a ship already spoiled that can only evade after it barrel rolls.

It adds a white action, it does not replace the red.

I don't think they want the second half of a linked action to ever be white. Otherwise what's the downside to getting two actions?

Cards like Expert Handling and Engine Upgrade do not change a red action to white, they add a white action. So a linked red action stays red.

But Debris Gambit is slightly different. It adds a red evade, and then the text states “While you perform a red [evade] action, if there is an obstacle at range 0-1, treat the action as white instead.”

The TIE Aggressor has a barrel roll linked to a red evade. It seems that if an Aggressor has Debris Gambit and barrel rolls to range 0-1 of an obstacle, it would be able to perform the linked red evade as if it were white.

I am not asking if it changes a linked action.

Say I have this action bar:

[WHITE FOCUS] [WHITE TARGETLOCK] [RED BOOST]

If I add engine upgrade, do I end up with

A) [WHITE FOCUS] [WHITE TARGETLOCK] [WHITE BOOST]

or

B) [WHITE FOCUS] [WHITE TARGETLOCK] [RED BOOST] [WHITE BOOST]

Based on what we know of that cards, I think it would be 'B'. UNLESS there is some hard rule that says that if you have the same action twice, you take the less difficult one.

Again, there are very few edge cases where this would even matter - I would just like to know so I can make my overlay generator show the right list of available actions! :)

I believe it's B as well which would be AWESOME for Coordinate to kick in. Do your white boost action, get coordinated your red boost action. :D

It’s almost certain that you still won’t be able to perform the same action twice, even if you have it on your bar multiple times.

A guy can dream!

And I mean, it IS technically two different abilities... I know, I know, I'm grasping at straws...

JUDGE! :)

With red actions now being a thing, forseeing an upgrade which says "when you perform a red action, you may [effect]" is not unreasonable, which might mean you want to take the red version, even if you have a white version.

And the game has no problem with the same action popping up multiple times on your bar - linked actions being the main example.

Devs have confirmed on steam that you can't take the same action multiple times in a round (BoLS stream, near the start, when discussing Vader)

I think it would HAVE to be that it adds a white action, instead of replacing a red action. Look at the turret upgrades for comparison - they add a white "rotate turret" action, but what would that action replace?

If an upgrade card replaced an action, I expect it would be explicit - e.g. "Replace [red action] with [white action]
