Some of the dogfighting at Yavin is lifted shot for shot from Battle of Britain as well.
WWII Situations Suggestions
If you're looking into starfighter campaigns, the Siege of Malta could provide some excellent inspiration - an isolated Rebel base, under heavy Imperial attack, having to protect its supply convoys, interdict enemy attacks, while preparing for the potential of a full-blown invasion.
I watched Anthropoid (the version with Cillian Murphy in) last night, great film & ideal for conversion to Star Wars!
A small team of Rebels dropped onto an Imperial world with a mission to assassinate the Moff at all costs!
If there's any doubt...
The St Nazaire Raid seems like prime stuff.
Commando teams launch a raid on a
German
Imperial drydock in order to cripple their ability to repair their vessels locally. A dramatic plan and events, which sees a ship being rammed into it's target, a diversionary air raid and a frantic escape from overwhelming numbers of pursers.
See the link below for an unbelievable WW2 battle I had never heard of until about a year ago. It has Germans fighting alongside Americans to defend French prisoners against SS troops assaulting a prison-castle. Throw in a former French prime minister, pro tennis star, and an SS officer as hero's on the "good" side during the battle, and yes it's unbelievable.

Translation to Age of Rebellion? Imperial Navy troopers guarding an orbital prison station (holding a few Wookies and high-profile prisoners including an ex-Senator and a former swoop racer star) joins forces with rescuing Rebels to hold off assaulting Stormtroopers arriving aboard a light cruiser? Add in one of the Stormtrooper captains switches sides at the start of the battle? Seems pretty unbelievable, but you could tell your players it's based on a true story? ?
ETA: Oh and yes this battle is finally getting a movie. Hopefully the made-for-action-movie real life script gets it the attention it has long deserved.

If someone were to do that battle SW style, it should definitely be set after RotJ, if not right after the Battle of Jakku, but just before the Imperial surrender.
This thread is great. I had a friend (ex-friend??) say they didn't like Rogue One because it seemed too much like a war movie.
I was all, you do realize that the name of the whole franchise is Star WARS, right!?!?!?
