It's kind of hilarious how much lore has grown out of that line, all because Alec Guinness didn't look sufficiently incredulous at the misuse of the term.

Yeah, the in universe explanation is fine. Han is a liar and a cheat, and he made up some stupid claim to justify his insane price for transporting the two. The truth is that the Falcon is NOT a fast ship, and when questioned about its speed he made up a dumb claim about how it's the fastestest ship evar. Then we see literally every other ship outrun the hunk of junk in the films. We even have RotJ notes about relative speeds, and the only thing slower than the Falcon was the B-Wing.

The people who take his claim at face value are the same mouth breathers that make fun of Storm Troopers for not being very accurate, even when we have clear dialog explaining that they were instructed to let them escape the DS-1.

Fast in a system is different from fast between systems. A sports car will get you to a mall pretty quickly. But a bicycle is faster once you're there.

Wow, the salt is real. There was actually a novel explaining the origin of the Falcon and it essentially boils down to the trio of droid brains working together, 'hyperspace streamlining', and an already intense engine system.

In the old EU, Han's true claim of making the Kessel run in 12 parsecs was a true measure of speed, since to do the 'kessel run' one had to go through the Maw cluster - the same super dense cluster of black holes the death star was hidden in during phases of construction. In order to go closer to the black holes (thus decreasing the distance from over 20 parsecs to a mere 12)you have to get an enormous increase in speed, at least according to conventional slower-than-light theory. That is, of course, hyper-light speed.

At sub-light values, the Falcon is still impressively powerful. You can't jargon away inertia, and the fact that ships weighing 1% of the falcon have the acceleration to out-manoeuvre them in a dogfight doesn't mean they're any faster over a suitable straight-line distance.

And, of course, the Falcon isn't the fastest ship ever. I believe that in the old EU that title belongs to the ship Anakin creates on Naga Zedot, then promptly destroyes to save lives like the good jedi he is. I'm pretty sure the author was Greg Bear - an amazing read. So the Falcon's around about the second-fastest ship in star wars in hyperspace.
