Super Mega Epic Format

By OoALEJOoO, in X-Wing Epic Play

I've searched online a couple of times and haven't been able to find this:

A big limitation of Epic play is the size of the game board. What if you don't use a board at all and play on a much a larger space? Most of us don't have a super large table but perhaps we can play in the floor.

Apologies for the crude graphic but you get the idea. The goal is to defend the Corvette with a bunch of A-Wings. The TIE Bombers can shoot torpedoes to Huge ships at Range 10, which is one meter and is checked with a measuring tape. Since Range 10 is much farther than the Range 3 lasers shoot at, if the Corvette is to survive, the A-Wings must to go out and intercept.

Torpedoes are shot at Range 3 to small/medium ships per the regular rules. It would be a matter of forming up the right squadrons for a nice game. My main complain about Epic play is that the limited space does not allow for proper interception of a bombing run.

What do you think?

Might need to buy some knee protectors though....

True, ergonomics is probably the main issue. Perhaps this can be arranged in a FLGS by setting multiple tables together.

I tried a big match on a 5'X9' table tennis table. It was very hard to reach ships in the middle for movements and measurements. I think 3X9 or 4X8 is about the biggest you want to go.

The floor don't work for me because my pets are curious little creatures.

Sorry but this thought came up.

Now of course I have no room (pun slightly intended) to speak.

I am still hopeful, but I do understand why we may want to recreate the Battle of Endor, still even Epic is best used in moderation. :)

Having sat/knelt on the floor for a massive crawl through Risk Legacy before, I can tell you that no matter what you try to do you'll have back problems for at least a fortnight. Cushions help, and little stools are even better, but nothing prepares you for that near-constant leaning over.

If you have a trampoline or access to a trampoline, that might provide a suitable large surface, but the flex would be awful.

What you need to do is use a 3D printer to make full scale models and put them on wheels with RC motors. Then program the various maneuvers into like a tablet or pad device. That way you can sit in the cockpit and just use a tablet or pad move while you just ride around in comfort. You would need to play in a parking lot, or warehouse or something similar. Might as well mount laser pointers on them as well to use for simulating hits.

6x4 play area works fine if you play up to Double Epic. Excelent 2vs2 or 3vs3. Standard W40k table

6 x 4 is good. For large games in other systems we routinely push two together to make an 8x6 table, and it's still quite possible to reach to the middle of the table.
