Questions - Dwarf Rangers

By Wytefang, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

Have 2 questions actually:

1. Dwarf Rangers, " Scout. Quest. Forced: After one of your other [Dwarf] units leaves play, deal 1 damage to one target unit or capital." - My question is how does this card work if it's wiped out along with a ton of other Dwarf units by something like Troll Vomit? Do units die one at a time or all at once? If all at once, I guess I could see how it wouldn't work, really.

2. What if you have 2 Dwarf Rangers in play and both are wiped out at the same time (Similar question to #1 above)?

And I actually have a 3rd question but I'm kind of embarrassed to ask it since I should know this answer by now.

3. Does Toughness block direct damage from cards like Flames of Tzeentch, or from units like Nurgle Sorcer (pay 3 resources to deal 1 damage to a target unit....)??

Thanks for any answers, folks.

if they all die at once, their Forced doesn't activate.

and Toughness works for any non-uncancellable damage. So for Flames of Tzeentch, no problem.

Troll Vomit clears everything off at once, so Rangers go poof along with all others, they won't kick in before they themselves die.

Unless BT is out or the card specifically states uncancellable damage, Toughness works.

Okay, thanks...I was coming up brainless on the Toughness thing for some reason.

I'd like to see something official on this, because the rulebook says: "Forced effects always occur immediately whenever their trigger is met, and they cannot be cancelled or interrupted by other actions."

Nowhere does Troll Vomit say or even insinuate that it overrides this portion of the rulebook.

All the units leave play at the same time with Troll Vomit. Dwarven Ranger might have Forced ability, but when you're in the discard pile, doesn't matter.

Again, I'll wait until I hear something official that says you are right, since you are less authoritative than the rule book.

How's this for official, tough guy?

Per the Flying, Fickle FAQ of Fate: CS 30 The Greatswords
The Greatswords “Forced” effect does go
off when they enter play.

So we see that ' Forced: ' effects do find the conditions they are searching for when those conditions exist simultaneously with the ' Forced: ' effect, even when coming or going.

Entering play and leaving are not the same. FAQ only mentions enter play. When DR leaves play, how is he still in the QZ to kick in his Forced? He is either in discard or QZ, can't be in both. If he's in discard, can't kick in his Forced, if in QZ, he didn't leave play, so what did that say Troll Vomit do to him exactly then?

"Dwarf Ranger

Q. If multiple Rangers are destroyed by the same effect (e.g. Troll Vomit, Judgement of Verena, combat damage), do they trigger their damage on destruction?

A. No, they must be in play for their trigger to activate."

Yes, there is no link to the answer like in many other ones, so I guess you'll argue that point next.

I thought I got a specific ruling from Nate that they had to be in play. In any event we can resolve this just by looking at the wording on the cards. I am going off memory on the wording so shoot me if I misquote.

For Dwarf Ranger the check is "after another dwarf unit leaves play". When troll vomit goes off, all units leave play at the same time. So after all of them have left we look around and see if there are any Forced effects to resolve. Since the Dwarf Ranger is out of play his forced effect cannot be checked and executed.

Greatswords check is "after a unit enters this zone". So you play Greatswords into the zone. Greatswords is a unit. You check it's forced and find out that after a unit enters the zone hegains one power. so you give him one power.

Alright, duly noted. Good points all aplauso.gif . But dig this: if, as the rulebook states, an effect can only trigger from cards ' in play' (unless otherwise stated on the card), then Greatswords' ability won't fire off until it is established as ' in play ', not 'entering play', as a card is either in or out, yes? If we accept this, then G-swords has already been ' in play ' by the time his effect triggers. How, then, can he find himself unless the conditions are met at EXACTLY the same time, you see what I mean? And, by extrapolation, if THOSE conditions (G-swords' presence in play and triggered effect) find each other at exactly the same time, why then won't D Rangers' effect and presence find each other in the same manner? You guys are 100% correct that the rules don't specifically mention that leaving play is like entering play, but if you think about it, they don't refute it, either. And it seems more viable to me that simultaneous conditions are met in similar fashion when a card both leaves and enters play than to follow different rules for each. Eh? Any backers?

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Keep in mind that in the Errata, the word "after" now reads "when". So, both G-swords and D Rangers look for units WHEN they enter and leave play, respectively, not after. This matters a bit, too, even if it seems a mite nitpicky, y'know? happy.gif
