Genesys: Net Travelers

By Austin421, in Your Settings

Escape to the Net, leave your worries behind.

The net is a place where anyone can be anyone, and all of your dreams can become reality. In Net Traveler, the players take on the roles of avatars in a virtual reality know as the net. In this dystopian cyberpunk setting the real world is plagued with disease, war, food shortages, over population, extreme climate change, and catastrophically low employment rates. So people turn to the net for escapism. Travelers are those who have been able to make a lively hood on the net. What was once seen as a basic IT job now has become epic battles of avatars vs giant monsters. Travelers know the ins and outs of the net, how to manipulate it, and how to work within it, making them appear as gods compared to others.

This setting was inspired by the ideas of READY PLAYER ONE meets Digimon the Movie and a little Inception, less about being in a video game and more about having virtual reality integrated into every aspect of our existence, where the players will fight fire walls, Ai, Hackers, Pop up Ads, and viruses. Because the players are playing as Avatars they had a new level of freedom to create what ever kind of character they want. We have a Dragon that is a hacker gamer tag Book_Wyrm, another player is an anime magical girl, one is a samurai, another is a blood born character, and another is a character from Kingdom Hearts. It has really invested the players into their characters and unlocked a creativity in them that I haven't noticed when playing other settings.

I started the players off with a simple first mission, where they are hired by a Takka Banking Co. to help assist them in an Active Hacking situation. So the players are sent to the companies website and servers which appear to them as a massive office building where each floor of the building contains a different "page" of information sales, customer service, accounts, and so on. They find two delinquents, in Call of Duty looking avatars, stealing funds and information from bank accounts. The players then battle the foes, manipulate the environment, and eventually tag the IP addresses and delete the opposing avatars. The goals over all to achieve are to secure the site, recover any information and funds, and tag and delete the delinquents.

Would love any comments, suggestions, and questions.
