In need of advice... Racing Events.

By RebelDave, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I have an idea… basic premise: The PCs need parts for a starship. The only person who can get them in preoccupied and not interested in helping them because his 'race team' have gone missing, and he has a lot of cash riding on his team participating in this event.

The Event is a cut throat race, A bit Demolition Derby-ish.

All entrants must provide a civilian land speeder or speeder bike, and have 1 day prior to the race to mod it with whatever they can find in a junk yard.

No vehicles can have vehicle mounted weapons.

Vehicles can be crewed up 1-3 members.

During the race, points are awarded for passing markers (5 points), taking out (knocking off) an opponent crew from their vehicle) (NOT allowed to shoot directly at the crews… but.. You know…)… and 10 points for taking out an opposing vehicles.

Crews must earn 100 points before they can pass the finish line.

Lots of betting on this event.

My question is.. How would you run the tracking for the 'other' competitors, not directly involved with the PCs vehicle? I know you will all says "Mass Combat Rules" but this is slightly different… and advice is welcome!

I see 2 ways to handle this. If you have a big group, have each player take control of a competitor, even if it is not their character. This keeps them involved.

If your group is small and involved in your ship, try running the race by yourself with just the NPC's. Give each a position at each round, and a predetermined attack, (i.e. ram the vehicle ahead of me, shoot the vehicle behind/beside me). Then add your players in, and attacks will be based on where they end up in the positions.

My group is 4 players.

I was thinking 3 on the crew, with the other 'Pit Crew' calling out locations of other teams from a 'Pit Wall' as such.

Its mostly tracking how the other teams are faring when the PCs are not directly involved.

The race isnt a point A to B... its more a free for all arena (over a large area), where the teams need to score enough points to qualify for passing the finish line.

Its that tracking I need to work out
