Which upgrades do you like and why?

hey all - still have a very limited amount of actual play time (3 games) and am getting together with a pal tonight to run through a few 500 point games and as I'm building out my lists, I'm curious which upgrades you guys really like or even consider "auto-include", and why?

All the heavy weapons options are fun. And the hard point upgrades too.

Heavy weapons and Hardpoints are generally worth it. Force Reflexes, Saber Throw on Vader and Esteemed Leader on Veers. Grenades sometimes work. Everything else runs into the "more boyz, less toyz" rule, IMO.

for starter games long range comms, so i don't have to remember if they are in range of my commander...

Force push equipped to Vader to drag traitors out from hiding and into relentless range.

That really only gives you a couple inches of extra distance. It's got its uses, but really only matters in a really narrow range band.

Very true, but when it works I love the theme of yanking enemy squads around and placing the minis in a cohesion set up that exposes them. The threat range of force push is greater with Luke.

Vader should always at minimum have reflexes and saber throw stapled on.

The ATST should always have at least one extra hardpoint, two if you can.

I like the DLT troopers to help the stormies issue suppression tokens and land hits.

Season to taste.

Stormtroopers and DLT-19 are almost the same word in my book. I can’t think of one without the other now!!! I usually put mortar or grenade launcher on ATST, and run Vader with Saber Throw and reflexes or force choke depending on the army

Z-6's because consistency is for imperialist dogs!

...actually yeah, I've had like 3 lists where that was literally the only upgrade on any unit. That gun is awesome.

Grenades.

yeah - it's like you got 6 stormtroopers, but without the extra health and armor.

I would take a look at the Flamethrower or Z-6 if only because it’s fun to roll a ton of dice :)

And without the surge to hit, or precise 1 or red defense dice......

It is a scary amount of dice that averages out to 1.5 hits but every once in a while you'll get that god roll and wipe something out.

It's 1/3rd the price of your comparison point, so my original point still stands.

No surge to hit.

For me I seem to staple the z6 trooper to squads and luke gets battle mediation and force reflexes.

Imps get dlt19 and flames. Vader is force reflexes and saber throw.

DLT-19 has won me several games. Plinking away at armour or being able to shoot Rebel Trooper units while they are out of range of you and suppressing them is huge. Red dice are nothing to turn one's nose up at.

I like DLT's they give the Stoomtroopers a much needed punch.

Team that with impact grenades for vehicles, and troops to go from white dice to black.

I rarely field squads without a heavy weapon option. Sometimes ill leave one naked just for a cheap objective grabber or a sacrificial unit though.

I prefer Concussions on regular Stormtroopers, though they enjoy aiming so much I rarely bother. Snowtroopers get Impact grenades all the time though.

The power harpoon. It's cheap and handy for giving suppression to targets of opportunity on account of being 75% accurate. One day I'll get to shoot an ionised vehicle with it.

It's characterful and fun.
