Vindicare Assassin

By Lupus Octus, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Is it just me or does the Vindicare not gain proficiency in the Exitus Rifle & Pistol, whick are exotic weapons?

They don't seem to, but it's an easy fix. I would just give it to them for free.

Um ... looking back at the Vindicare, and assuming that I am not missing something covered elsewhere, it doesn't appear that they do. How odd?!? gui%C3%B1o.gif

I'd say this.

Yup yup. Call it Exotic Weapon (Exitus) . Covers both of them that way. :D

Now that is embarrassing lengua.gif . Well, one for the Errata.

I'm also kind of amused by how difficult it is for them to get their ammo. "Near Unique" makes it impossible for novice Inquisitors to supply their assassin agent with exitus ammo for an entire adventure and difficult for even a single mission.

Well it is near unique, since it's only made for the Temple. You'd have to go through the Vindicare Temple to get hold of more.

That, and the Vindicare, for most people, should only need one shot to kill, anything more is sloppy sniping lengua.gif Just give him another, more common, gun for day to day stuff.

Although perhaps the ammo should be a bit easier to get if you have a Vindicare in the Cadre, I agree. Few targets even deserve a shot from an Exitus. Use your Influence or money and see if you can pick up something like a Nomad for the Vindicare. Even if you're playing a really powerful Inquisitor, it's unlikely that you will get enough Exitus ammunition for the Vindicare to use his rifle on everything.

at the bottom of page 17, the "Silent Death" box. States that Vindicares get the talents (Exotic exitus rifle/pistol) for free at rank 9.

it's not exactly an errata, but it's official enough for me.

Well that change was inevitable anyways. Can't have an Assassin unable to use the very weapons he is known for! It's comforting to see FFG act quickly about that though. I am much happier about the Magos bit personally, though it was even more inevitable.

They'll get it on the next print run.

Ascension is a very hap-hazard book from a formatting perspective. I found three mistakes on one page alone and I wasn't even looking for any. I suspect an errata will be coming eventually to clear a few of these things up, as well as answer some questions (eg. How does one kill a Vindicare who dodges 115% of the time, 8 times a round?).

Sadly, the lot of printing errors aren't unique to Ascension. A better proof-reader would be a really cool thing...
For the Vindicare: Storm weapons on Full Auto - and in a lesser way, everything else on Full Auto. He dodges one bullet per Degree of Success, so if he rolls less DoS than the shooter, he gets hit. With storm weapons, he even has to roll twice as many DoS.

A group of Dire Avengers led by an Exarch will normally be enough to make the vindicare sweat a bit. Those Dire Avenger Shuriken Catapults on full auto are extremely evil, especially if the Exarch uses his 1/battle Bladestorm ability. Five + Exarch should be enough. Basic group formation for them seems to be nine DAs + Exarch though, which I think is just overkill against nearly everything in the game.

And I agree, anything wielding Storm Bolters or other full-auto weapons with the "storm" special ability will also do the trick.

Fortunately the Eldar are not quite as married to fixed squad size as the Imperium. Dire Avengers come in numbers anywhere from 5 to 10 with the possibility of an Exarch replacing one.

Or if your Temple Assassin is particularly unlucky or the GM is EVIL above and beyond the call of duty there is the Biel Tan "Court of the Young King": An entire squad of mix-and-match Exarchs led by the Avatar of Khaine. Of course explaing why Biel Tan's finest are slaughtering mon-kiegh in some insignificant backwater on the wrong side of the Imperium is going to be alot of work for the GM.

Have you considered the possibilities of an Alaytoc Pathfinder/ Vindicare stalk-and-duel situation? A pair of uber-twinked out Unnatural-Agility-havin' snipers of borderline supernatural skill operating against each other... Mmm... Sexy! (It is not quite as dramatic a step up as Assassin: Vindicare, but the Eldar Pathfinder is a Ranger with a BIG upgrade.) Of course since Rangers and Pathfinders usually come in small teams this could get quite brutal, not that THAT puts any of you off from it.

This is one of the great things about Eldar, you never have to explain anything about their actions. What they do they do because some Farseer has come to the conclusion that they have to do it for some reason that will only become clear in hundreds or even thousands of years. Some Mon'Keigh will have no chance of understanding all their motivations in all situations.

Yay. Enemy at the Gates turned up to OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAND!

I was about to say that the vindicae would annihilate them but...

The Eldar are far better at sneaking than a Vindicare I am led to believe from most fluff.

Also they can get cooler gear.

I wouldn't be too sure about that... the best Eldar may probably outdo a Vindicare, but not without serious effort. Vindicare training, equipment and enhancements most likely dip deeply into Dark Age Archaeotech.
