Imperial Reserves

By Commander Kaine, in X-Wing

So, we have a mechanic for Reserve, but we only saw Boba and Morallo use it (so far). While Boba's ability is a bit janky, Morallo is actually great for flanking. Anyway, that is not important now.

We are unsure about the number of X-Wings possible in the game, but it seems like naked 5 X-Wings are a possibility. It might not, but let's imagine it is possible.

We do know that TIE fighters are unchanged, except for unique characters, and we also know their point cost, at least for the academy pilot.

We knew there was a power difference between the old X-Wings and the TIE, but the buffs of the X-Wing, the rework of core mechanics (evade, ordnance) all serve the rebel ship.

Remember, we are imagining 5 X-Wings.

Here comes my solution, revealing the hidden plot of FFG. Hopefully.

What if there are rules for reinforcements on the imperial side, using the Reserve mechanics.

- It would fit very well with the theme of the empire. They are all about numbers. Even if they are a bit crap.

- It would help solve the issue of "there are too many of them", by limiting the mechanic to times when a friendly ship is removed. Any additional ship would be just a lifeline, and not an extra pair of dice thrown at you. Also, you don't need to buy yet another TIE fighter expansion.

- The game wouldn't get clunky. An 8 ship swarm would play exactly like it used to, and the first rounds wouldn't be so overwhelmingly slow as if you placed up 10-12 fighters.

What do you think? Is it feasible? Would it work? Do you think something like that is possible for 2.0?

Sounds a lot like the flanking rules from Bolt Action. Would probably work out fine tbh. When you place ships in reserve they cannot come in on the first turn and then after turn 1, they are able to deploy at the start of the turn, before setting dials and movement. They would be able to start their deployment on the flanks, or the players starting edge of the mat. On the flanks they would be allowed one range increment for each turn they spent in reserve. So if your reserve comes in on turn four, they could start at range 4 on either flank, touching the edge and facing inward (or whichever direction).

RHO AND NU SQUADRONS RESPONDING.

Yes but if that happens, we will get reserves for rebels only ?

Jokes aside, it may be fun

Something similar to this was proposed a number of months back, long before second edition was announced. I think it would be a great addition to 2.0. Something like a ~10 point upgrade with one charge that let you spend a charge when you are destroyed to remove all damage cards and redeploy. Imperial only, non-unique only. Very thematic, though it might by tricky to properly balance.
