Foba's sidetracked painting thread, Or: Make CIS Great Again

By Foba, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

Hello!

Been a bit sidetracked from the Homeworld Project, as I got inspiration to start to print and paint Confederate ships when my Cheapo e-bay airbrush arrived in the mail.

Boy, am I satisfied with these. First real paintjob that I'm quite proud of. The Models are sourced through the interwebs, printed on a CR-10. Not Mel class or anything, but satisfactory quality nevertheless.

Feedback Welcome ?

Things look great ?

but i I must say, the single greatest irony for me with the title of this thread is for some time the Russian Federstion referred to itself as the CIS..

Well, CIS has many meanings, hopefully people understand what I was going for ?

Well done! Your scaling may be a tad on the small side, but they look right in relation to each other.

Keep posting. I'm looking forward to seeing where you go next.

Right you are, noticed a litte too late that they aren't "right" scale, as they are just a bit bigger than the victory. But, I'thinking it might not be too bad after all, as they were supposed to be (and im gueesstimating) 16,5cm. Now they are 14,5cm.

I'm using the same scale for the venator, so at least playing CIS vs republic should look okay ?

And I was amazed that you saw that they where too small, until i relized that thats what a plastic-crack addiction does to you ?

As for whats next, painting the rest of the lineup of CIS ships and try to print the squads.

After that its painting my zann consortium fleet, and printing the republic ?

Small update on the process.

Works been killing me recently, but managed to get something done. ✔️

C-9979's and Gozanti cruisers. Nothing fancy at all I'm afraid. ?

CIS Squads, Vultures, Droid bombers, Ginivex and bellubab (lacking the Sheatipede shuttle and Tri droid) almost fresh out of the printer. The vultures are a pain to clean ?

Experimenting with a blue base coat, might change it to grey instead ? (valleo model air Blue Angels)

A little something something for the Republic. ?

Realized that I mixed up the measurements on my keldabe and agressors so I have to print them again.. sweet..

Thats about it for the time being. ?

Two evenings to paint in the same week? Why YES!

CR-20 flotillas, consular class cruiser flotillas, Republic Pelta and Arquitens. And sideorder of tri droids.

Bad lighting as always, in normal lightbulb light they looked better, I swear! ?

More work done ?

This process is taking some time, as work and other obligations seem to take up a lot of time in summer. Lucky I'm living where the sun doesn't set for a while so these sessions can drag out for some time. ?

Great job! I'm excited to see more of your Republic ships. Keep up the great work :)

Opinions Greatly appreciated ?

OK, here goes:

  • Love the Vultures.
  • The canopy on the Belbullab-22 is *VERY* well done, but the metallic paint isn't my favorite for this scale. I think a glossy or semi-gloss grey would get a similar effect with more even coverage. I think the red on the wings is a little jarring, but it does contrast sharply if that's the effect you were going for.
  • For the Fanblades, I would select a slightly different color for the canopy to set it apart from the wing surface. As is, they kind of blend together. At tabletop distance, I think they're very good but if I'm really nitpicking, the red on the wings is not evenly distributed. I can see areas of lighter and darker color. If that's just an artifact of your application, I'd suggest moving your brush in a pattern from the wing root outward to mimic the radial color distribution of the source fighter.

Thank you for the feedback,

To be honest, the metallic is very much over the top, and a dark grey would be much better. I thought that I had had a bit of success with it and decided to try a bigger scale of usuage with the belbullab.. witch turns out that i have to redo them ?

On the ginivex, the blacker color is from the nuln oil i used ( and spilled on me pants, floor, rug and 3d printer.. **** lids.. ? ). Reapplication of base colour should do it, useing your brusing advice ? that should "lighten" the canopy up sufficiently.

I'm convinced GW spent a lot of money engineering paint pots that are designed to spill as much paint as possible, while still allowing it to dry inside the pot, thus engendering further sales...

Thats why my paint pots have a crust of dried paint all aroud them, not because I sloppy, I'm fighting the big corporations. Standing up against the big man! #conspirasy theories

You are actually making me jealous. I would love some CR20s and a few more Bayonets.

Haha, how come? ?

Can't get any. The Bayonet is no longer listed on Shapeway's, and nobody but you has made the CR20 yet.

I am a bit of a completest.

Just a bit? Someone's being modest.

Well I would otherwise send you the files so you can have shapeways print them for you, but I don't think they are the right scale nor detailed enough to fit with your other models ?

Hopefully Mel is able to get around to them eventually.

I do sometimes wonder how long the list of requests he's got is.
