There is quite obviously a boycott by long-time, mostly white male fans in progress. It's not because they don't like women protagonists or more diversity. It's because KK and her minions have specifically shown them in their blatantly misandrist films (and told them directly when they complain about the direction the franchise is going) that they are not welcome as fans of Disney Star Wars. The "force is female", the First Order as specifically a representation of "white male" fascism, the disgraceful ends to Han Solo in Force Awakens and Luke Skywalker in "The Last Jedi", Finn as a bumbling idiot sidekick, Poe as a hotheaded representation of "toxic masculinity" put in his place by pink-haired Admiral Gender Studies, Rey as a perfect (and perfectly boring) Mary Sue who never has to earn anything, Lando retconned as a "pansexual", the irritatingly out-of-place SJW robot in "Solo", etc. I could go on and on. It's insulting to 50% of the fan base.

I would like to be able to tell you that you are wrong and that you are being too sensitive. I would like to be able to tell you that you are just missing the point of the message Disney is trying to tell in the new films. I would like to tell you that the films finally strike a balance in regard to diversity.

Unfortunately ... I can't say any of that because you hit the nail on the head. I still enjoy the new Star Wars movies well enough, but there are parts that make me squirm because they are so blatant in the social or political agendas they are trying to push. I'm not boycotting Star Wars, but I'm not going to defend it from these sorts of criticisms, either.

I know right? Female characters (and non-white ones at that) getting to do things!?!? What has become of the world?!??! You poor oppressed white guys have it rough! I guess you'll just have to stick to watching 99.9% of all media created ever so that you will never be challenged by any ideas or representations you don't like.

Back to Runewars...I hope they keep cranking out cool characters for each faction (specifically female ones too!)

It’s time for the Jedi *cough* this thread to die

but seriously, Rey is perfect? She’s an imbecile who Forest Gumps her way through two movies.

I'm confused by this rant... the original Star Wars completely blows apart the normal damsel in distress trope when a bad *** Princess Leia, who has been resisting torture from the scariest dude in the galaxy, grabs Han Solo's blaster, shoots a hole in the wall, says "Follow me boys!" and fearlessly jumps in... Star Wars was pushing strong female leads in the 70s (and it was awesome then). Nothing is different now...

I won't suggest that episode 7 and 8 are better than the original trilogy, but the pushing of strong female characters is not new to the franchise.

If I understand the issue (I don’t watch movies any more, myself), strong female characters aren’t the issue. It’s the weak male characters, and/or male characters set up as strawman arguments for certain social opinions.

I understand this criticism of Poe and Finn in the last movie. I was disappointed in the turn those characters took. But I don't feel this applies to Kylo, Han, or Luke at all.

Personally I feel there is a LOT to scrutinize in the new trilogy, especially with regard to The Last Jedi. Whether or not they emasculated Finn and Poe is pretty low on my list of criticisms...

As I said, I didn’t watch the movies, so I cant comment on them directly, but I know that I’ve been rolling my eyes regularly with a number of the books I’ve read recently. Far too often, I’ve hit spots that I know were put in there just to show that the author—or, more likely, the editor/publisher—is....

.... hm.

I’m having trouble explaining this in any way that doesn’t sound arrogant. Let me see if I can explain through an example.

I grew up in the 70s. There were some shows with fine black actors that I enjoyed, both in lead and supporting roles. There were some shows with token blacks who you knew were in the show simply to show how forward-thinking the writer/director was. They bugged the **** out of me, and mildly embarrassed my black friends.

It still happens, just the causes they’re working on have changed. And not only do I still find it as annoying, but it seems to be more frequent these days. And The Mouse is one of the companies that has caught the disease. I don’t blame anyone for saying that Star Wars is in the process of jumping the shark, if it’s obvious that politics were in mind during at least part of the writing, rather than them just trying to write the best story possible. Even if the main characters and story were fine, seeing any evidence of writing by committee—especially if the committe includes managing directors or oversight boards—spells trouble down the road.

Uhm -- in the original trilogy, the Empire depicted on screen is nearly 100% white, 100% male, and 100% human? Wasn't that sort of the point? They were a fascist non-inclusive group? Isn't the First Order is just a reboot of the exact same faction? How did *that* aspect really change?

1) The old adage is never truer: no one hates star wars like star wars fans.

2) This tangent probably belongs on another forum. Star Wars gets enough love, lets get some Terrinoth positivity going

Amen. I frequent this forum to get away from star wars.

I'm going to mention Star Wars again, but only to say that the recent articles have shaken my resolve to buy into X-wing Second Edition. Don't get me wrong, I love X-wing, and I fully support all the changes they're making. But when I look at my finances, I realize that I could buy some pretty cool Runewars products if I divert my X-wing money to Runewars. Specifically, I am interested in picking up some extra Wraiths, Death Knights, and the newly announced heroes. I suppose if I pick up Baron Zachareth, I'll also want to add a Rune Golems expansion to my collection. It's a decision only I can make, but the bottom line is that I am absolutely LOVING Runewars right now!

And I believe this will happen more and more.

I'm definitely doing both, I only collect Daqan though, so that makes it easier. On a side note, moving forward in X-wing 2.0 you can get away with only one faction there too now, which is a really nice change.

This is why I don’t mind FFGs slow product rollouts. I’m doing Latari and Waiqar in Runewars, and Imperial in Armada, Legion, and X-wing. It would be hard to keep up if everything came out faster.

And you don’t want to know how long my painting queue is..

I’m in the same boat (and add Shadespire for extra paint queue insanity). I’m only doing Latari with a side order of Waiqar for Rune Wars and I’m running very light on Imperials for Legion. Slow release pace is pretty much a necessary feature for me.

Currently supporting Waiqar and Uthuk, in RW. All Armada, probably minimal XWing, just to keep my purchases updated.
