Why bother buying 1.0 expansions?

By spacesound, in X-Wing

Just a friendly reminder that the 2.0 re-releases are more than likely to come with additional pilots/upgrades when compared to the conversion kit (excl. Wave 1 that will all be included in the kit). So the couple of bucks you're now desperately counting on saving at 1.0 clearances y'all end up spending on second hand market to grab the new toys, while drooling on the new terrific resculptures of the ships you already got.

The real unknown here is:

Are the later waves of 2nd edition (wave 2 onward) going to have new pilots or upgrades that are not included in the conversion kits that are important for competitive play? If the ships in Wave 2 have the 2nd coming of PTL or some other upgrade that every list is going to want multiples of, then we might all end up having to buy models we already own anyway (fingers crossed they don't do this).

If you want to be a real miser, you can just buy the conversion kits and use the ships without their models while you wait for the corresponding 2.0 content to come out, although you wont be able to do that in tournaments. But who really wants to fly modelless plastic squares around?

FFG has already said there will be "alternate ways" to get the new cards without buying the new ships.

To my thinking, if you have a smallish collection, its business as usual when it comes to buying Wave 1 scum/rebel/imperial until you cap out the conversion kits. If i'm going to pay $50 bucks for a rebel conversion kit, would be a waste to have 1 or less of each ship to some extent. Hoping to see some stuff go on sale to clear shelf space that i could never justify for home games, like heroes of the resistance (don't need two YT's) or the entire scum faction ?

The main reason i see to hold off on buying 1.0 models is so that you can trade or sell your unused conversion kit materials to buy 2.0 stuff for the new pilots and things.

Does that include the latter waves mini conversion kits (that we have 0 info or costing on) to get you the new pilots in those sets?

Not as of yet, but the basic idea of the cost was about getting everything playable from the start. The difference does shrink after that, but if you're not ever buying actual expansions you're saving money that you would probably have spent on new waves.

There will be. "Booster packs" let's call them, just cardboards/cards without the model(s). Doesn't mean this will come for free. Hopefully you'll save enough now to cover such booster later.

As discussed above, you'll be able to buy the cards skipping the model. PTL has been said not to be recreated otherwise than through the linked actions on dials.

Well right now it would be to fill out the extra cardboard in the conversion kits since many players are not going to have the exact listings. (I know I won't with 2 core sets gozanti and 2 TIE Expansions). There will be a lot of cardboard sets of ships on Ebay for cheap so those not picking up conversion kits but still want to convert you can look there. X-wing is not a trading game but 2.0 will make the secondary market spike up quite a bit when it first hits shelves.

Mynock did a cost analysis and you are better off buying 1.0 ships+conversion kits than an equivalent number of 2.0 ships new in the box because of the cost increase. And that's at MSRP, not including any discounts due to stores want to clear out old ships.

Or shops doing deal to get people buying 2.0 conversion kits. My store is preordering them at 29.99 this weekend to coincide with Solo.

FFG said they are considering on releasing update packs for those who already have a v1 ship. so no need to buy again a model

Yeah, I grabbed some 1.0 hwks because i never got one. But now they are good, and who knows when they'll rerelease the hwk. So not i can use the conversion kit for it. :)

On 1.0 vs 2.0 releases:

Did I read correctly somewhere that the Saw Guerra expansion is fully compatible as is for both 1.0 vs 2.0?

Thanks.

Okay, but if it's grey on screen does that not just mean... they're grey?

This!

I have a buddy into prop replica and it’s just wacky to me.

The engines on the falcon glow blue! Just because that’s not on the prop does not mean that including that detail on a toy is inaccurate.

The blue engine grate looks so much cooler than the blank one.

Why bother with anything 1.0?

If you have a small collection like mine, buying 1.0 stuff to fill out what is in the 2.0 conversion kits makes some sense. Also after 2.0 is fully released, we will probably see a lot of 1.0 stuff going for very good prices.

1.25 is roughly the cost per ship from a conversion pack (total number of ships / total cost)

Amazon has most small ships between 10-12 USD total costs is 11.25-13.25.

Small wave 2.0 ships are 19.99 new.

Last I have seen many people selling ships on the cheap for 5.00-7.00 per small ok buy sell trade forums, eBay, local and I know many people are going to be selling single conversion kits. I would say it’s much cheap to stick with 1.0 stuff for now and buy a kit or kit pieces from wholesalers.

I am gonna buy 4th Headhunter as there is enough material for 4 of them in the Conversion Kit. The same will go for other ships I like but don't have in my collection yet.

I don't think this makes sense except for wave 1. Other ships will be released with more cards than what are included in the conversion kit, so you will end up buying the 1.0 ship, the conversion kit (which you were going to buy anyway), and a future card pack for each wave.

I would only buy 1.0 at this point if it were heavily discounted.
