Calculation of victory points

By Lslx, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi,

Reading the rules for the xxth time, I find out that the when counting victory points, rules don't specify if Gate and Monster trophies from devoured or retired investigator should count. I never do it and now I wonder.

There is that text in Devoured investigator section: Discards all of his cards except unspend trophies. Why if it is not to count them? Why gate trophies and not Monsters trophies? The only other reason I found of not discard them is to force exhaustion of the gate pile faster.

Any though on that?

Honestly, 'score' is really just for posterity's sake, so it makes no real difference, so long as you do it the same way every time.

There isn't an official answer, but if you want my opinion, I do count them. Why? *shrugs* it doesn't say not to. Players are never eliminated in Arkham Horror, only characters are. Trophies seem to belong to the players , and therefore I reason that they are counted.

I don't count them. If an investigator is devoured before final combat, it makes sense to keep the trophies (both gate AND monster trophies), since you'll get a replacement investigator. Since that's not the case in final combat, I discard the trophies.

But it's not covered in the rules, AFAIK. Maybe the FAQ in the making has something on this subject?

They count because they are not lost as you point out, nor are they spent. They become the property of the "heir".

You ask way. I don't know. It's a very strange rule in my opinion. I can think of several reasons, however. You give one. It also allows the heir to recover more quickly as trophies can be traded in for many things. It may just have to do with scoring too. Also the closing victory requires a gates to be held by the investigators.

Since I'm doing the leagues scenario, I wish to count my points correctly to compare myself to the others. I guess I should have post my question it the league thread :)

Thanks,

::Laughter:: maybe. Although if you're really being competitive you should probably replay a game in which an investigator gets devoured in final combat. I'm writing this from the assumption the investigators devoured during final combat don't get a score :') (since their trophies don't transfer to another investigator). Anyways, it doesn't really matter. And you won't get an answer in the League Thread either (probably) that's long since been abandoned.
