Solo Discussion Thread [SPOILERS!]

By Forresto, in Star Wars: Armada

As far as I knew, DROID RIGHTS was something talked about in the old EU lore and stuff, but never actually addressed on the nose with a major character actually speaking to this effect. Not even in Rebels.

The whole Sjw angle completely flew over my head until my fiancee pointed it out after the movie. I guess I was having too much fun enjoying the Droid rebellion?

Not this again...

People are mad because L3 promotes social justice.

People are also mad because L3 mocks social justice.

Regardless of political affiliation, doesn’t this seem ironic? I have an idea: maybe it’s neither. Maybe they just made a character with a realistic personality type (and we can all agree there are people like L3, right?). Maybe what the audience think about her explains more about their experiences and worldview than anyone else’s. In any case, we just can’t know, and nobody making an article or video knows either. So rather than risking another thread lock, can we keep this free of politics? ?

Thanks.

I always wondered why the "droid" issue was never adressed in the movie yet. I mean they are slaves in all means, and even the "good" guys use and discard them at will.

However it is strange to do both things in ONE character: The frist droid working for dorid freedom AND the frist droid with an open female touch (which I think is a terrible idea, as droids are and should be neither male nor female, and L3 is even described as a "feminie droid").

Loved the movie, but it left me with a question.

Why would the Rebels want Corellia back (CC campaign)? It's a dump.

Ship building capital of the empire.

Without it, the Empire can't roll SD's of the production line anywhere near as fast.

Just saw it. That was a lot of fun. People need to stop taking Star Wars so damned seriously. It feels like the fan base forgot how to have fun.

The Old Corellia was based upon descriptions from novels.

The New Corellia seems quite a bit different?

They both can exist as we only saw one area of the planet. We know the slums are not great but what did we see a 20 mike radius of the planet?

indeed what we saw was slum+spatial docking & repair, not exactly what you'll recommend on a world-discovering tour. Corellia certainly has lush forests, breathtaking cliffs, towering glaciers and mountains, nice and clean historical villages, etc...

young Han never got near any of it, too bad, but even now on Earth, you could easily find 1 Billion people that won't either!

I blame tournaments. The need to win for some seems to take the fun away from what are first and foremost just games.

The same with the non gamers and the movies. I may have had my life changed in '77 at a tender age of 7, but they're just a bunch of fun films you know. It was good to see a SW movie where the fate of the whole galaxy didn't depend on the outcome.

A lot of the so called bad press is coming from a very vocal youtube minority that will say anything just to make a living off the platform and have no real interest in the subject they are using as a vehicle for their own self gratification.

Ok, so that might be a bit generalistic but it's what I believe because they are generally never positive about anything. And whilst I'm ranting....most of them are millenials.

In the end I loved Solo but others didn't, I just don't understand those that get a kick out of having vendettas.

the droid rebellion was great

protocol droid pressing a buttonfreeing the slaves saying "freedom" in a polite tone and volume.

Why do rebel armies want weapon factories? they are giant explosive hazards?

Note that she’s not the first in the films; EV-9D9 from ROTJ is (I think) the first, followed by TC-14 in TPM, followed by Flo in AOTC, followed by a BD-3000 luxury droid in ROTS. As to designing droids that way... I can’t speak towards “should” or “shouldn’t,” but it definitely makes sense, at least. Humanoids build things to mimic their own assorted images and ideas, after all. And most other droids are confirmed to be male (B1s, C-3PO, etc.)

They want the imps not to have them.

And above all else, you are forgetting Star Wars isnt about war. Its about humanity. And so freeing an enslaved world means everything.

What is sarcasm, can you explain?

Rebels made a great deal about pastoral paradise planets being corrupted industry hellholes under the rule of the Empire. Corellia might still be space California under all that smog, but the presence of a shipbuilding industry creates this scummy place where Han finds himself.

What this scene tells us is Corellia has lots of water and it's really big on the shipbuilding industry. Works for me.

Premise is already wrong. Why should he be the coolest charakter in the old movies? Never understood that. He was a pretty bland and uninteresting character.

Name a character "cooler", then. What constitutes "cool"?

And for the love of all, if he's a bland and uninteresting character, then please tell us why.

My wife and I went to see it yesterday, and we both really enjoyed it. We thought Alden Ehrenreich did a great job as Han, and Donald Glover nailed it as Lando.

My question is; where is the rumored Dreadnought. I thought I saw an outline of one under construction. I was expecting to see it in the air, did I miss it?

Standard "chaotic neutral" wanna be viewpoint(he's really chaotic good), next to no character growth, misogynistic and so on.

I only saw the movie once, but clearly saw that dread landing/takeoff (maybe). I think it was when Han and Q'ra are chased by the (bounty hunter?) in their not-so-posh landspeeder. it's an aerial view, just before they zoom under a Goz or C-roc, in the background there is a ship with a beak front, bulbs in the middle and a squared poop (exactly the dreadnough from rebels) landing, i think followed by another one taking off (this one is less sure). A few seconds, no more, before the camera goes down to the landspeeder.

Dont get me wrong, I think its only natural to give some female voices, like we do today too. However that doesnt make the droid female, and shoehorning female attributes into droids is a bad idea, espaccally when that makes all other droids, that have just been neutral droids "male droids" and helps forging the "male = standard, female = exception" impression.

TC-14 is a good example, as it as far as I remeber had no female attributes beside the voice. L3 however also had a - very unessecary - female body physiognomy that makes no sense.

Vader, Obi-Wan, Leia, Chewbacca, Mom Montha, the Emperor, Tarkin, Ackbar, Lando, Boba Fett .... wow even I didnt think that he is so low on the "cool" ladder in Star Wars, I guess if I go through the characters I could find a dozend more cooler than Han.

I should tell you why he is not bland? Is this question of yours not telling enough?

Vader - Awesome yes but not cool

Obi Wan - too stiff and starchy

Leia - heroic and a bit cool

Chewie - fun, underrated and awesome but not cool

Mon mothma - bit character with little input into the stories

Emperor - Awesome but not cool

Tarkin - similar to Obi Wan but obviously more strategic

Ackbar - not much screen time really but a good leader - hardly cool though

Lando - Yes very cool but also steals Han's clothes at the end of ESB so not cool enough

Fett - everyone loves him but in reality he's just a bit character

Let us not forget that without Han, his buddy Chewie and the Falcon ANH would just be a straight heroes vs villains. Han added the humanity and real life cynisism that grounded the whole franchise, adding that much needed grey area in between light and dark. Whilst the OT story was really all about Luke, the feel of the rest of the Galaxy was all Han.

I'm still bummed Disney didn't ask me to pick the best date to release the movie. At this rate, I'll be waiting until it comes out on video. I must be crazy, but as soon as it hits summer, I just can't find a couple of free hours to see movies. I was so blazé about the past 3 Star Wars offerings that I didn't feel the need to block out time to see this movie.

The question I have: is this O.K. for kids? Like, a 5 year old?
