Solo Discussion Thread [SPOILERS!]

It's probably the weakest Star Wars movie of the Disney era, but it's still ok.

I loved L3 and Lando. They nailed it and were the most fun parts of the story. I'm not thrilled with Alden or Emilia as actors. The chemistry felt insanely forced/fake. I wish they took more time to build the emotions vs just make a heist film. I know where they end up, I just wanted more from it.

I definitely agree that this film had no *WOW* moment unlike RO or TLJ. That probably was the main reason I felt ho hum about it.

Hmm I considered Maul’s appearance a wow moment. Everyone in the audience gasped at his appearance and applauded when he ignited his light saber. I guess there wasn’t a spectacular battle scene that presented a wow moment though.

It really blows my mind news agencies keep spoiling this. most people won't have even thought about getting tickets to this yet. not the only offender, I saw MSN post something similar too

Agreed, no respect for movie audiences with thes spoilery headlines and click bait.

Like all of the Disney Wars movies, the story was fairly shallow; the pacing was far from perfect; and the efforts to fold this into the Star Wars universe were at sometimes overly forced and misdirected.

I've come to expect dumb cinematic action sequences from Disney. The Maelstrom escape in Kessel was no exception. Probably my biggest individual gripe of the movie (aside from Han's surname). I don't get why every suspense filled action sequence in today's blockbusters has to be drawn out and over the top. Whether it's a Resistance freedom fighter trying desperately to drop the last 'space bombs' (preposterous) onto a dreadnought or in Solo's case the hyperspace fuel being dropped into the engine while the maw closes and the Falcon gets dangerously close to the gravity well. It's just poor cinema. Sometimes an action sequence should have a simple, uninterrupted flow. This is what makes the Russo brothers so refreshing. Cap and Bucky beating on Iron Man didn't have hangups to build suspense. It was a fight the way a fight should play out. This kind of play to the audience's emotions may have worked way back in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I'm sick of its overuse.

But, to get back on track, besides the above problems that plague nearly all movies made today, Solo was the first of Disney's entries that gave me more of the Star Wars universe in a way I could accept. Sure, The Force Awakens kind of did that too. But, in retrospect it was such a carbon copy of the original trilogy that it's hard to credit any originality. Add in that the Resistance/First Order conflict seems so non-epic in scale after the abortion that was The Last Jedi, there's just not enough 'Star Wars' about it. But, with Solo, you get a great glimpse into the fringe. The obligatory cantina scene on the space shot felt real instead of forced. The battlefield scene that actually showed the Imperial army felt like a Star Wars battlefield. Even the spice mines of Kessel felt in place, unlike the failed Canto Bight scene in TLJ. I had not gotten that Star Wars feel from any of the previous movies, Rogue One coming closest, but ultimately failing with how the fledgling Rebellion was presented.

That feel, coupled with the great casting choices for Han and Lando made this enjoyable. The story would have probably made a better cartoon or comic book than a full length feature film. But, the acting of Ehrenreich and Glover were enough to overcome the poor plot and make this entertaining throughout. I would love to see what they could do with a more original script that wasn't trying to force all Han Solo lore into one two hour segment.

Anyone else get strong Cadian Imperial Guard vibes from the battle of Mimban?

This movie is going to give a lot of stuff to Legion, X-Wing, and the RPGs... not so much for Armada. Hope one of these anthology movies can serve the large space cruiser enthusiasts who want a one-ship one-crew adventure flick. Would love to see how the crew of a VSD (or even a CR-90!) navigates this era of history.

I would love to see VSD and I already should have seen one in this movie, it is only a few years after Revenge of the Sith and main ships of the Empire should be VSDs with ISD joining in new.

Just watched

1. I like it.

2. I would just have done a remake of Smokin' Aces with space ships. It would have been gorgeous.

I loved it. It actually FELT like Star Wars and I was smiling like a kid from start to finish

I really liked it. My second favorite of the four new disney movies(behind Rogue One).

Also I loved that Han basically funded the Rebellion

I was gonna wait until Netflix for this, but based on what this forum and other SW fans are saying, I think I’ll go see it in theaters. If anything for the world-building and the supposed OT feel, which besides the Battle of Scarif, made RO so great.

I could do without Darth Maul fan service though (still just don’t get how someone sliced in half lives in the SW galaxy).

The wow moment is Han shot first and this film canonizes that he always shot first.

-

I went in extremely cynical, both from a serious break up a few days ago and no enthusiasm for the concept of a Han Solo origin film.

I absolutely loved it. There are some rough spots, unusual number of terribly written lines, and jokes that don't fall right but there are so many incredible parts that make up for it I'm more then pleased.

The film is imbued with so many subtle and not so subtle references to canon that it feels like the first view into normal life in the Star Wars universe.

Plusses :

-Han Shot first!

-Alden as Han and Glover as Lando. More please.

-Designs are inspired, Enfy's Nest looks incredible.

-Great references, only a couple out of a hundred or so felt overly fanservicey. Most felt super awesome as an EU fan.

-Excellent set pieces and action sequences.

-Corellia and all the planets were well characterized and interesting unlike the rather boring locations of say TFA.

-The Battle of Mimban was a welcome display of Imperial might.

Minuses :

-Sloppy introductory text. Please just use a crawl. Nothing else works or is as smooth.

-Felt like it was missing some context shots. Did Han win the Falcon using Lando's little device?

-Some lines are cringey and others uneccesarily expository. Not a lot of them but when they hit they stick out.

-L33T, I don't hate her character but I think they could've made her more 3-dimensional then such a caricature.

-Maul. This is a hard one. I don't hate his inclusion but seemed uneccesary and it must be confusing to someone not following the lore. Last time film watchers saw him his body halves falling down a pit.

~

Solo isnt an incredible film but it's above average and definitely enjoyable. If it says anything, I would love a Han Solo Trilogy.

My ranking is as follows:

4>5>RO>8>3>S>6>7>1>2

Just got out. Loved it.

I could care less about Maul, but whatever, some people like him.

Finally seeing Correllia and Kessel on the big screen, though... And both are completely believable, and close to how I pictured them, even though they diverged from the EU (which, in the case of Kessel, I am eminently okay with).

I thought both Han and Lando nailed it.

I was a bit concerned about Harrellson being in it because I generally don't really care for him, but even he did a great job.

So many Easter eggs.

Just saw it an hour ago, honestly I didn't hate it but it wasn't really all that memorable to me. If I had to liken it to anything, it was like eating wheat bread. I enjoyed the set design, liked seeing some older aliens there and man is Two Tubes just the best new alien design or what? It started off fairly strong, and I was getting invested with Han on Corellia and him leaving it but as we got to Mimbam it started to lose me a bit. Han was okay but meh, Lando was great I'd be willing to see more of him, liked Chewie's intro and I found L3 rather annoying. Like she was just way TOO on the nose, like it would have just been better to treat it like IG-88 and just getting to droid revolution/freedom rather than shaming waving droid right in others faces. I was not sad at all seeing her shot, but I did like the look of the droids on Kessel and thought the one that she freed first was more enjoyable for the little bit of time it was on screen. Also, what was up with the whole her talking about Lando being in love with her? That felt really unneeded.

Liked the small nods to lore stuff like Aura Sing, though Maul felt a bit eh probably cause it was spoiled for me. And to be honest, I liked him more in Rebels, especially when he was introduced at the end of season 2. Still it felt a bit like a paint by the number film, had to show Han getting his blaster, meeting Chewie, playing Sabac, winning the Falcon etc... At least they didn't show him getting his vest or pants.

TLDR: Not bad, not good and pretty forgettable with Lando being good and L3 being annoying.

Fun fact:

Han is about twenty in this.

Its an interesting parallel to Luke in a New Hope.

Luke actually had a great life compared to Han.

I think L3 was annoying as well, but I'm actually really glad she was. Made a solid juxtaposition to Lando's insane charm that his best friend is this obnoxious droid on an equal rights bender. The droid revolution on Kessel had me cracking up.

I think the thing I appreciate most is getting to see snippets of the universe we haven't yet seen through the Stories, and this was no exception.

Eh, not really. I mean it definitely isn't bringing anything to Armada since that one scene with the ugly as sin ship was dropped. X-Wing really at most gets the Scum Falcon, and the Heavy Tie, maybe the AT Hauler but I sort of doubt it. The only one to really get stuff from the film would be Legion and IA, but eh most of that is just limited to the imperials anyways. That said I do hope we get a Two Tubes alien in one of those games sooner rather than later.

Just saw itand I liked it. The movie is light hearted and feels to me slightly less serious than other star wars while not really being so.

I loved the settings, especially mimban and correllia. I also liked Alden and Donald as Han and Lando respectively, of course it wasn't the OThan but a more .... optimistic and maybe - in a way - naive(?) version of Han.

There were some things I didn't quite liked but nothing major which spoiled the movie for me.

One of those things was the way Maul was handled in the end. I am not bothered by his apperance but rather I think that it was bit to on the nose. Also I think that the Coaxium was fairly dull I think that setting it up hyperfuel from the beginning was rather dull, it just feels weird to me for some reason. It might be that it seems just weird to me that the fuel for the Hyperdrive is apperantly this ultra valuable and rare Substance - even that it appears to be used in minimal amounts - still.

I didn't mind L3 too much. She was a bit to theatrical and a bit on the nose, but over here in Germany there is a trilogy of well received satirical Books, based around a cabarettist/minor artist sharing a flat with a comunist, anarchist kangaroo (yes you've heard right - and remember its aimed at adults, the books are genius however), were the kangaroo has a personality very similar to L3 with just some added laziness and pop culture references, but with the same theatrics and other character trraits (too complicated to list here, I think - but just asked and Ill translate the few sentences characterizing iz from wikipedia). However as soon as I noticed that I found it fairly amousing always Imaginening a kangaroo in her place (is that weird?).

So back to the topic:

I liked the movie. It was fun, light-hearted and enjoyable.

It is not the best Star Wars movie, but certainly not the worst. I liked it more than the Last Jedi and only a little bit less than Rogue one.

Of the ten movies it is somewhere in middle, though with positive tendencies.

My talk of nonsense ends here, (I mean my "review" serious - I just don't think high of my writing skills)

Addendum:

I really dug into the recanonization of the regular imperial army.

PS:

The Book is called the Kangaroo Chronicles in englisch, only the first part appears to have been translated though,

I saw it for the second time today and I noticed that the Arrestor cruiser actually does appear in the film. I can’t remember exactly where, but I know it was in black and white and sat between two Star destroyers so I think it’s in the propaganda/recruitment video right at the start when Han is trying to escape Corellia. Thought it was one of those diplomatic ships from the start of the phantom menace the first time I saw it.

So I guess it’s canon ?

I loved that Imperial Propaganda scene. The way they played the Imperial March in a key higher made it much more upbeat and “happy” than the ominous sounds and feelings it evokes in the original trilogy

Went to th ed midnight screening only 66 tickets sold. I call that a win and worth my time alone. It was a good and im happy with it. There are a few things like in all movies that make you question but nothing i would change.

Fun ideas time

When L3 the SJW droid died wax that Disney killing future SJW theams in future movies?

Is that Reys mother?

Will there be a sequel? Lots of room for one many questions

Maul crime boss movie? please be true that would be one **** of a money maker

Its a good moive everyone i went with thought so but you know a haters gonna hate so i dont care about anyones negativity about :P

Quoting this because I'd like to expand on some of this. I too went in expecting to be disappointed (not because of a life event, but just because I go into most movies like that. I don't have much fun). I think that is part of why I liked it as much as I did, because I didn't have a vision for the movie before I saw it. Now, I'm going to address the points quoted above.

1. I loved most of the actors/actresses as well. They all pulled their parts off well, I loved it.

2. Again, I agree that the designs are beautiful. This film made me want to consider taking movie stills and other art and making alt-art cards for various games. (mostly I want to make a blockade run alt-art with the star destroyer.)

3. This too I liked, and I wish it would have carried over into other properties (mostly rebels season 1), in that NOT ALL IMPERIAL TROOPS ARE STORMTROOPERS DAMNIT. THERE ARE GROUND TROOPS TOO! This also helps explain why Officers aren't wearing battle armor as well.

4. I disagree about the intro text in general, in that I don't want to stories to have opening text at all. I liked that Rouge one just started, and maybe that wasn't feasible in the post production **** this thing went through. Overall, I would prefer crawls to be relegated to main series things, and think that text on screen is mostly just a savior for bad writers/directors with a few exceptions. (Again, not attacking the film crew this time around, I blame the post-production ****)

5. No, he removed that card and won fair and square. This may be a side effect of the theater, or just a lack of footage from shooting, but I can understand this.

Overall. I liked it a good amount, and am excited about more of the stories that come out. Mostly I liked that it shows Disney trying new ideas in some movies, and I support Star Wars becoming more varied if it means more people like it.

Without being over the top about anything I was enjoying the entire movie from start to finish. It had what I wanted it to have, action, drama, and loads of aliens. Made my night. Makes TLJ look even worse then it already is.

Also didn't like Maul being there. I think the Clone Wars show resurrecting him was a cheap gimmick and I was dismayed to see this mistake find its way into the actual movies. Movie-going audiences will now be wanting to see him again on the big screen, and they're going to be disappointed to learn his death has already featured in Rebels.

Here's the thing, though - Disney has just indicated that the next standalone movie is going to be Boba Fett.

Which, on that news breaking, I almost sprained something for how hard my eyes rolled back in my head. What a totally lame character that gets all of, what, one line in the original trilogy?

BUT...now that I've seen 'Solo'...it makes a lot more sense. Specifically, the way this one ended - tt'd be pretty easy to do a follow-up movie to this one with more of Enfy's Nest's gang being hunted down by Maul and Qi'Ra with Boba Fett in the mix.

I thought was good.

Would rather have seen kira buy her way into the empire at the end, maybe as a way of trumping the crime gang dudes... could almost have been an origin story for governor price! Yeah i know thats in thrawn.

Movie was great.

Lando making documentaries about himself was pure gold.

More of audio dramas really. PLEASE Disney, release a Lando Audio book narrated by Donald Glover. It would be hilarious and amazing.
