I read something about lines down the middle of the new second edition movement templates, but I don't know what the purpose they serve as well as how important they are. Anyone care to fill me in?

Barrel rolls, and talon rolls.
They no longer go anywhere you want you either have to match the center line top or bottom of the template to your bases center line.
Also for positioning your ship along the template when you bump.

As Ice and Ubul said there are two reasons.
First when you Talon Roll or Barrel Roll you no longer have free reign with where the template touches the base. It now has what are three options, The line in the middle of the template lines up with the middle of the base, the line across the middle of the base is either put at the front or the back side of that template. Not sure how this works on Med or Large bases, whether the template has to touch the middle line or wether it has to be at the very front or rear of the base.
Second it is to remove the need to build a "train" when you bump. Instead of build the template out and lining the guides up you simple line up the center line now indicated on the base insert with the line down the middle of the template.

Always uses center line of base, so the T-roll has the same forward/backward displacement as a small ship's T-roll
Are all of you getting two second edition core sets, then? I only "need" one for a damage deck (since I'm getting a second from the TIE Reaper) and the cards. Literally the only thing I need from another second edition core set is JUST the templates because sharing one pair is too bothersome. Not sure if there's a better option since I don't know if people will be Ebay-ing those off, especially since they need them.
Wait...if you’re getting one core set, why would you need a second? You probably need one, but that gets you templates and damage deck (and cards)....what’s missing?

Already have you the information you seek.

You could probably just draw them on the 1.0 templates.
I'd get a set of acrylic templates instead of a second core set. There are plenty of them available now in Etsy. That's a serious "quality of play" upgrade, and probably a few bucks cheaper to boot.
Of course, then nobody's going to want to use the cardboard set anymore, so then you'll need a second set... And acrylic tokens...

I heard you get a free one with different art from pre-orders.

Yep, if you preorder a Core Set from your store or FFG, you get an exclusive damage deck. Read about it here.
Also, this article demonstrates the new rules for Barrel Roll.

The reaper doesn’t have a damage deck in it

You're right. It doesn't. But I never said it did, did I? It's a pre-order bonus. Parakitor was nice enough to give you a link for more info.

It's a preorder bonus for the 2.0 Core Set, not the Reaper.
Is there already a supplier for 2.0 acrylics?

There are at least a couple. Highbridge Designs and Curled Paw Creatives are both making them on Etsy.
