Solo movie talk (No spoilers)

By MacchuWA, in X-Wing Off-Topic

It's 3:30 AM, so this will be quick. But:

It doesn't suck! As someone who truly disliked TLJ and really liked Rogue One, Solo is solid. 7/10 for me. Good Star Wars feel, bit of a weak first act, Donald Glover is great, Alden Erenreich grows on you. Chewie is cool. There are some very nice nods to the old movies, the old EU (though one of these in particular felt a little shoehorned in) and the Filoni TV series' (first one it's a little bit of fun, and I'll say nothing beyond that).

If you're on the fence, go see it. It's un, and you'll leave happy.

For X Wing though, there's basically nothing more than what we see in the trailers. The AT Hauler can deifnitely go into space. Neither the Falcon's pod nor the new TIE plays a substantial role, and if there were any other new ships they weren't prominent.

Now, bedtime. :)

cool. I'm seeing it tomorrow.

Where is the spoiler talk topic? ^_^

Anyway. 6/10 from me. Solid, predictable star wars western. I did not like the one of the last plot twists. It felt forced to me, and Corellia seemed to be a little to much grim dark and a little to one-dimensional, but overall, solid, entertaining movie, doing some lore building for canon , which basically is just taking old stuff we already had. Could have been an oneshot of my SWRPG Group. ^_^

It was an enjoyable, bumpy and predictable ride. Better than expected. Better than the PT but not as good as the OT, R1 or TFA.

There is one scene near the end that was jaw dropping for me. Never saw that one comming. Everyone who watched it shoudl know what i am talking about.

Jar Jar was always stupid but i never really understood all the hate for him. L3 is worse.

Overall a fine movie.

I was glad that the moment from the trailers I hated most did not appear in the same form in the film

Is it a smoke before, or after movie? How jokey is it?

No idea about smoking before or after. If you mean runtime, we were in the cinema until about 2:40 AM, but that included ads and trailers for about 20 minutes.

Much less jokey than TLJ, they don't do the thing where they undercut dramatic moments with a joke. Phoebe Waller Bridge's L3 gets a few comedic lines, but they kind of work in context. Han and Chewie have a couple of funny moments too. Never over the top though.

Really looking forward to it this weekend. After the heavy and in parts ill executed TLJ, I'm hoping this gets back to the old cowboys in space vibe that ANH had. To misquote Dark Knight, Solo might not be the film we want right now, but its the film we need.

Can't believe the amount of people on youtube calling for Kathy's head or bouycotting Solo. I actually want Solo to be a bigger success than TLJ and then they might realise that the winning formula isn't to kill the past but embrace it.

Love the thought of a loose trilogy start with this and followed by any of the following: Calrission, Fett, Chewbacca, Falcon, Hutt etc. Youngish Solo in all of them but only as a vehicle to explore other characters.

Definitely going to get to the cinema before Euros next week. Might end up goign tomorrow as it's half term next week and I'd prefer not to see it in a cinema full of kids.

I’m not seeing it until Tuesday. I’ll have to avoid the Internet between then and now. Except here, for the spoiler free posts and the other x-wing and Legion talk.

Geez, I agree! bringing back Jar Jar was a mistake, it was unnessary and he felt forced into the plot. Especially to have him go up against Han in a gun-fight and shoot first! Even his:"Tolda yo so, Solo, mesa the fastest gun" but just to have him miss. Satisfying to finally see Chewie rip his arms of tho.

Awesome! *shakes leg to check if there are any bells on it*

Soylo already a flop in china it's only made 0.12 million on opening night

for comparison the other movies did the following:

TFA 16m

rogue one 3.7m

TLJ 3.5m

estimated total nation wide 10 million before it's taken off rotation next week.

As a SW fan, regardless of your thoughts on Kennedy or TLJ, is it right to constantly talk down the movies and even call it the incorrect name?

If the movie fails there may be no more after ep9. Do you really want that?

Solo is exactly the film we need right now, a light hearted swashbuckling romp in the SW universe which might recapture the original trilogy.

It's gonna flop everywhere, but Disney are well aware.

Do you want it to flop everywhere?

Do you want it to flop eveywhere?

I work in the cinema industry, I want it to succeed so I got a healthy bonus at the end of the year.

But it won't, it's going to flop. It already has flopped. It's too late now.

So it official opens tomorrow and its failed? Everyone thought the same of ANH in 77. I hope you're wrong, and not because I get paid if it succeeds.

Yes.

Do you have any figures? Number I've seen thrown around the web yesterday were predicting decent sales, comparable to the last two movies.

It will probably open about 2/3rds of Rogue One, but finish up around half RO for the full run. There's no point comparing it to TFA/TLJ.

Attendances for the midnights were well below Justice League.

Well, Chewbacca, C3-P0 and R2-D2 are timeless. Ewan McGregor is Obi Wan. Now we have a new Han and Lando...

All we need are the twins to be cast and we're ready for the Original Trilogy remake...

Now THAT would kill the fanbase.

I saw it last week. I enjoyed it. It's campy and fun in the way you'd want a summer action movie to be. Definitely way better than the trailers led me to expect.

I'd put it below Rogue One, but it does capture that "Star Wars feel" in its look and tone. The humor seems more organic. Nearly all the jokes in The Last Jedi felt flat and out of place. That isn't a problem in Solo. Donald Glover is great as Lando, but his sidekick is every bit as obnoxious as her name is (fortunately she doesn't have a lot of screen time). Alden Ehrenreich is a decent Han Solo. I think he got a fair amount of the mannerisms right, and the story makes Han Solo feel like Han Solo (though I couldn't help but notice that Ehrenreich is quite a bit shorter than Harrison Ford). Woody Harrelson is good, and I liked his crew. Emilia Clarke's acting is exactly what you expect it to be.

That said, while it is fun, the reviews saying it isn't memorable are spot on. I don't know if there is even one scene in Solo that will stick with anyone. No really memorable characters. No great bits of dialog. No amazing action sequences. No good battles. I mean, it has all those things. Dialog, action, battles, etc. It's just that they're not going to stick with anybody. You'll enjoy Solo. You'll like most of the characters. Unless one of the plot twists in the third act makes you mad, you will probably not care much about the story. Who is Han Solo? Turns out the answer isn't all that interesting.

^^^ yep, that.
