Character creation walk through

By FrogTrigger, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Just curious if anyone can recommend a good video, website or podcast talking specifically about all of the steps and decisions involved with making a new character.

ive been prepping for a while, read through a large portion of my rule book and have done a few test runs myself, id just like to compare my routine to those of others. See if I can pick anything up or replace something to make it a better experience for my players when we start our campaign.

An example specific to force and destiny would be great, but any area is good.

Going to cross post this to the gm forum.

Different people do different things, and I see a fair bit of backtracking and do-overs when we have a char creation session (we prefer building characters together at the start of a new campaign, to help party cohesion). It’s a messy process more than a routine. ?

I use oggdudes tool and with practice can put a character together pretty simply now - the big thing is deciding race

I don't have any examples of the creation process but I find the most crucial step in the process is understanding what type of character the Player wants to create. When I was planning for my current game, before we looked at Career or Specialization, I had each player tell me his concept. From there, I was able to point them in the right direction for Specializations.

For example, one player started wit this:

Quote

I kind of want to play a Jedi who so detests Jedi-poseurs and Sith so that he hunts them, but that is more a bounty hunter character.

Since Star Wars is about sacrifice, I am trying to pick a character flaw. I think she/he and her/his family were separated by strife early in the character’s life, and he/she is seeking them, or clues to where they are, if they are alive or dead.

Alternatively, his family was murdered by a bounty hunter, and he is seeking revenge, trying to track down the bounty hunter The bounty hunter took something very personal and valuable to my character’s family in addition to fulfilling the contract to kill the father. I may or may not know the whys? Revenge? Not very Jedi like, but that is where the dark side peeks out in the personality. This character flaw is similar to Anakin’s but the destiny is unknown. It is not about hubris and pride as much as it is lust for revenge. Whatever race the bounty hunter was the character has an antipathy for the whole race.

Right away, that screamed Sentry to me. Someone who is at the edge of turning to the Dark Side without actually doing it. From there, we fleshed it out to be Sentry/Investigator and picked his species. He already had his motivation so then we just had to create the character around it.

Another player gave me much less to work with. All he said was "I want to play a Jawa Jedi engineer/mechanic". We ended up going with the Armorer Guardian build.

There are so many options in the game, it is easy to do most any concepts. Sometimes it is more expensive because you have to go out of career for the second and third specializations but you can give them XP break as GM if you feel the concept warrants that combination.

If using OggDude's program is an option, I would highly recommend using that. It will do the math for you, and prevent various mistakes. You will want to deal with each tab on the left of the Character Generator eventually, but I'd start with

Species-->Career-->Characteristics-->Specializations-->Skills. Then go back and fill in your back story, motivations, etc.
