A most interesting fleet I played against (spoiler alert: I lost)

By Sybreed, in Star Wars: Armada

So, I wanted to tell about this fleet because it kicked so much *** and did something so unusual that I felt it deserved to be discussed.

The guy I played against is a known MC80 lover, and since the FAQ, he had been trying to find a new way to make the MC 80 shine. Enter the Undying Death Pickle.

I don't have the exact list, but here's what it is in short:

MC 80 assault Cruiser

- Ackar

- Defiance

- Walex

- ECM

- Reinforced Blast doors

- X-I7

CR90-A Corvette

- Jaina's light

- TRC

- Officer Leia

- Projection expert

GR-75 flot:

- Repair Crews

GR-75 flot:

-Repair Crews

7 Z-Wings

Lieutenant Blount

2 X-Wings

Jan Ors

His objectives were Ion Cannon, Solar Corona, Advanced Gunnery

I picked Solar Corona with my Interdictor Double Glad fleet.

I managed to drop all of his shield an put his MC80 to 3 HP, but next round, he used RBD, had the CR90 regen 2 shields with an engineering command and had his command changed to engineer as Leia also changed his command so he regened even more shield, and his GR-75s took care of the remaining damage cards.

Long story short, anything I threw at the pickle wasn't enough. No one at the tourney was able to pick his MC80 off. The TRC90 was a big threat as it was always flying behind the MC80 in formation. My opponent deployed in a corner of the map, so formation flying was easy for him and made it extremely hard for me to squish in with my Glads to take something out without getting blown up by defiance. Bomber squads weren't enough against the swarm of Z-Wings.

In short, his list was very effective and hard to play against. He finished 2nd at the tourney. I think I'll be able to upload a pic later. I ended up losing for a 78 MOV. I only lost a Glad and some squads, but I'm the one who performed best against him. Still, I thought his list was genius and very unconventionnal.

edit: photos are too big, can't upload :(

It's an old style pickle, but it checks out.

When they released Shields to Max, lists of undying mc'80 were not the most rare thing to see. I had a version for a very long time that was called "the repair fleet" by my group for rather infamously fixing it's way through so many games and then derp gunning ships off the table once a round. Several occasions that fleet would not just survive, but table lesser opponents while ending with out damage cards and back to full Shields. It was eventually countered as time when on by being drowned out by bombers. It was great at tanking heavy beater shots and trading back profitably large counter blows, but couldn't deal with the mass of small bombers. Put a few interceptor Ace's in his way and try to avoid the worst of his 80, kill the Light, take it his fighters, and you should have enough points to secure a win. Or switch to rebels, and throw a better fighter corps at good Dave and just table him.

I would think that ye olde MC80 would fall to an external racks BTA kuat fairly easily, given it could probably tank a broadside worst case. You only need 12 damage, and with either vader or leading shots its not too hard?

I've personally just never got regen anything in Armada to work for me: too many high powered pew-pews to go around!

My fleet didn't have that... and no one played a kuat in that tourney I think.

Yeah, the Mc80 repair is a fun little fleet. Achilles heel to smart bomber lists and BTAvenger, though less now that before since they can use their def tokens on the side arc. Still, a Kuat with ACM or an ISD-1 just throwing huge damage should be able to crumple it in 1 turn. Similarly, a bomber fleet should be able to strip shields and press through crits (which can't be Blast Door'd off) and then mop up the following round.

It's definitely a HARD fleet to deal with for a lot of standard builds however, and congrats to him for coming in second with it! Sounds like a fun tournament.

Yeah, I was at that same tournament and played against the list right after Sybreed did. I was flying a bomber list with Adar, Yavaris, Luke and Scurrgs + a MC75. I managed to keep it pretty close at a 236-231 loss, but that's thanks to playing Precision Strike and racking up 60 objective points in the last round. I figured I was better to not even really try to crack his MC80, having seen the results from the Sybreed's game. I lost the MC75 and a bunch of my squads to his rather impressive Z-95 barrage.

The Z-95 meat shield screen was a lot more effective than I expected. I couldn't really get my bombers free until turn 6, and by then, there was no way I was cracking a full MC80 in a turn.

Very fun game, to be sure!
