The missing factor: points!

By Pewpewpew BOOM, in X-Wing

I am super excited to see unboxings today. However, the extent to which the various things we see are “balanced” in the game depends on point costs.

In the age of 1.0, I posted MANY times lamenting that FFG should change point costs to balance the game. I hope we get access to the app soon and applaud FFGs wisdom in leaving this as a backdoor for ongoing balancing. Game companies put forward new releases to keep up revenue (I don’t fault this - it is not a volunteer organization) and keep things fresh for players (so they play and buy more). Balance CANNOT be perfect in that environment. FFG is putting forward a method that recognizes this and allows them to respond.

Sure, a smart idea and effective implementation of that idea are distinct...but you have to commit to the idea first, which FFG has done.

I hope to see the app soon, even if it is in beta form.

Yup, FFG has an army of potential playtesters that are ready and willing to playtest the crap outta the 2e stuff and help make the point costs close to balanced at launch. Let us work for you for free! Please!

Releasing the app means effectively releasing the game.

I don‘t quite understand why they announced it so far in advance, but I don‘t think they can release the app so much earlier.

I think that it would actually increase sales IF the game delivers on the promise of 2.0. Haters would get to work out their ire and be ready to put $ down on release day (or find something else to play).

I'm hopeful that the app doesn't arrive until Wave 2.

Would be cool to have a few months just using Quick Build rules, learn the rules, get new players in, then bring the hardcore stuff in with Wave 2.

Yeah... No. I want to play with all of my space ships, not just wave 1 quick build stuff.

There's nothing you can play with using the app that you can't play with in Quick Build.

I’ll be happy to have quick build info so I can intersperse my 1.0 bon voyage matches with the occasional 2.0 preview match.

They could release the app with only the Core box contents available and patch in the conversion kits later.

How? Quick build has preset builds with pilots and upgrades... No costs, nothing. I'm pretty sure I can't use everything I want.

Sure you can, just not necessarily in the configurations you want.

And that's not a bad thing. It's a good thing.

Quick builds are only the wave one stuff, right? If they’re not in the CK, then we need the app to play our updated 1.0 ships until wave two.

Looks to me like Quick Builds are on the back of each pilot card.

Respectfully, I have to disagree here totally. Quick builds don't allow for list building or true competitive play in tournaments. The values are rounded. The game would really suffer to wait 6ish months for real points costs.

No, I speak for the greater good. Limited formats are awesome, and restricted options are challenging and skill-intensive.

They are, but don't force the community into one or the other, give us all the options.

They allow for limited list building and create incredibly skill-intensive games where the flying on the table is the most important factor, rather than somebody's ability to listbuild a dumb synergy.

Limited formats are the most skill-intensive. That's true in almost any game I've come across.

Customization is the main enjoyment I draw from this game, so I don't care about what do you perceive as the greater good. You can play however you want, but don't tell me how to have my fun. Limited formats might be awesome for you, I don't much care for them.

Limited formats also get boring very quickly.

Again, I understand the premise. I myself can't wait to play in the wave tournaments and have limited pools of ships and upgrades. However, you can't expect everyone to enjoy that mode either. The brilliance here is we are given a gradient of options. We don't all have to play one way anymore, 2.0 gives us so many more options. The app will actually organize all those formats.

Ya, SOTL, think you are in the minority here. While I agree using quick builds in some limited formats will provide an interesting game play experience, I would be livid if I didn’t have the capability of building my own list upon 2.0s release. That’s like, over half the reason I enjoy the game is building and customizing lists to the fullest extent.

I'm hopeful that you're the only who thinks this is a good idea.

Releasing the app doesn't stop you from using quick build rules, it's just going to piss off everyone that wants to play the real game and also throw a huge wrench into tournament play.

I cannot get truly excited for 2.0 until I start seeing points costs for the stuff I want to play with, otherwise I have no idea what's actually possible in 2.0.

Like a limited format? I'm down for that!
