Rik's Imperial Fleet

By Rikash, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

I painted up my squadrons for my Sloane list that I took to Worlds. I'm pretty happy with how they all turned out. My free hand is a little shaky on a few, and I'm not entirely satisfied with the white of the lambda, but I'm pretty happy with them overall. I hope you'll forgive the rough pictures, as I was working under mediocre lighting with my camera phone.

2.) Howlrunner

4.) Maarek Stele

5.) Colonel Jendon

8.) Soontir Fel

I've been doing some work to get more squads painted up as I'm beginning to use them in our CC, so I'll have to post more pictures later (mostly tie bombers/firesprays/advanceds for now).

Very nice. Maarek and Mauler look especially good.

@Rikash Nice work.

Any tips on-

How you get the red lines so straight on Howlrunner, Fel etc?

And how do you detail the cockpits, so the glass stays black but the frame matches to bodywork?

Thanks. I really like how both came out. I may make that squad Black squadron (which Mauler was part of) and do another tie squad in the same scheme, but with a fancier cockpit to differentiate him (kind of like I did with Saber/Soontir).

All the lines (including on the inside of the tie fighters solar panels are free hand. It's mostly a matter of practiced brush control, a steady hand, and having a good brush. I use a size 1 Windsor and Newton series 7 acrylic brush (the normal series not the miniature series). When I'm doing lines, I try and align the miniature so that I'll be doing the line in one pulling motion. I'm aligning the brush so that it's running parallel to the line I'm trying to paint and then doing a gentle pulling motion while also putting enough pressure on the brush to draw the line at the width I want. The paint should be applied by the side of the point of the brush as opposed to the actual point of the brush. I find that helps keep the line straight. More pressure will cause the brush to spread and widen the line. It takes practice to get it right. I do have to go back and make corrections pretty often. Compare the interior lines of Maulers panels vs Howlrunners or the generic ties to see the difference of uncorrected vs corrected.

The cockpits are actually super easy. I prime all the tie fighters in a moderately dark grey (Duplicolor sandable primer) that is probably equivalent to Codex Grey in the Citadel paint line. I drybrush with a lighter grey and then go back and hit them with a wash (Armor Wash in the P3 line by Privateer press is my favorite for this). I'm pretty liberal in applying it to the cockpit, so that it is sufficiently dark. This is the black of the glass (it has a slightly satin finish). After the wash has completely dried, I go back and VERY lightly drybrush with the cockpit frame. If I feel any particular part of the frame is still not light enough, I go back and carefully edge-highlight it using the side of the brush held perpendicular to the Tie's cockpit. You should barely have any of your grey on the brush when you do this, and it should be sufficiently thinned (skim-milk consistency).

good squads, send more!
