Helmets and Hair

By NukeMaster, in Painting

I decided that it is time to paint my rebel troopers. As I was looking them over to get an idea of the different things I will be painting I realized that one of them seems to have long hair resting on the top or her backpack.

I guess my question is where does the helmet end and hair start. Do the helmets come down to the neck so that all the other troopers hair is covered or is there a bit of hair on each trooper that sticks out below the helmet? I'm just not getting a good idea of what I am looking at when I look at the back of the troopers.

I assumed the helmet covered the hair and painted it as so. I suspect the reality is that there would be a bit of hair or neck showing through there, but it didn't seem worth the extra brain damage to paint a tiny patch of hair or skin color in the little gap.

The AT-RT drivers are a bit of an exception, as there is clearly neck all around there. And to my eye the two female troopers have visible hair (a lot out the back for the regular trooper, and just a bit of banks for the Ion). Other than rampant facial hair I saw no visible hair on the dudes.

The one with the hair out the back does her hair also come around to the right side of her face or is the something else.

I'm not sure what that is. I've been painting it as the lower ear flap on the helmet for simplicity. It's too hard to do detail work under the rifle, and no one is going to see it from more than four inches away.
