Using Runes in place of Numenera Cyphers

By MrCauliflower, in Genesys

Something that I've always thought was interesting is how plentiful and diverse the Cyphers of the Numenera system are.

Has anybody implemented something similar by bending the rules of Runes to have an even less powerful rune than the "Lesser Rune" that is pretty common and one time use?

Cyphers really don't require much of a special rule. You can use a lot of them out of the book, e.g.,

Quote

Adhesion Clamps
Wearable: Gloves
Usable: Handles with powerful suction cups.
Effect: Allows for automatic climbing of any surface, even horizontal ones. Lasts for twenty minutes

No Genesys rules necessary. Also, I do not have the upper body strength to use these, no matter how magic they are.

Even the ones that require some rules...

Quote

Intellect Enhancement
Internal: Pill, ingestible liquid
Wearable: Adhesive patch that activates when slapped
Usable: Injector
Effect: Substance adds 1 to Intellect Edge for one hour.

can easily be tweaked to "Substances adds 1 to Intellect for one hour."

Don't know that you need Runes, or even rules , to adopt Cyphers. I feel like I could run most of the ones in the Core Book as written without much thought.

Agreed, most cyphers have a purely narrative function.

You could call them whatever you want (based on setting), but at their core they are simply disposable items that let a character do a thing , once.
