Thinking About Finn

By Jobu, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

So I have been thinking about a Finn deck now. High level thoughts are he is an evader, investigator, can do serious damage but a one will and 7 sanity.

So Burglary and Pickpocket are no brainers. How much are people putting into Horror mitigation? He needs some help on Will for those treacheries that stick around until you pass a will check, but is it a lost cause? Do you try to pump Will or do you just try to have cards that lets him soak it/avoid those persistent treacheries?

Seems like a L0 Pete S will help him a lot. Are there other choices I am missing?

Anyone have any thoughts?

Take 2 "You handle this one!" (from that very box) to offload them on a more capable teammate (assuming you're not playing solo).

I took two Teeth of Eztli and used my first 3 XP on Relic Hunter. Once I get those out, his will problems are a lot less pressing.

I saw that one. It looks solid, you just need to hold them for when you need them. Knowing the encounter sets will help a lot.

You have access to Logical Reasoning in Seeker to heal horror and you have access to Dig Deep in Survivor to boost Will. Lucky! seems like a good card too, but you only have 5 slots to play with Seeker/Survivor.

He also seems to have a lot of moxie... My build has a fair amount of resource generation, so he could make good use of skill pumps.

I am not to hot about using his 5 slots on Will mitigation. I already think Pete S should be there for both horror soak and Agility so I would rather use the remainder on investigate boosts.

If you had to chose between Pete and Leo dL, which would you prefer?

I think he could also use some elder sign amulets as the game goes on.

i would choose Peter Sylvester because he is cheaper. Ultimately it might depend on if any in your group are using one of them. I also like Charlie Ross for Finn, but that might not be the type of deck you are going for.

We've been playing him through Carcosa 4-player, and about halfway through we haven't found his WP to be near the weakness a lot of people think it's going to be. Honestly, Akachi seems to be going down to horror a lot more often, thanks mostly to the bag composition. Might be a bigger issue in Dunwich though, haven't tried him there.

Ironically, we've found his 1 WP to be a weird sort of advantage. How often do you end up committing resources to a test to avoid a Treachery only to see it fail? Finn basically takes the check away and makes the effect automatic. That's not always good, but it does free up the potential for wasted resources. I also find that people will tend to overcommit to avoid fairly minor effects, which he also prevents.

If you do feel the need to mitigate it, Peter is an excellent choice for him (and good even if you're not worried about mitigating). Otherwise, we've found that most of the things you need to cover his WP are things you want in the group anyway - Let Me Handle This, L2 Wards, etc.

Overall, we've found him to be an outstanding investigator, and had more issues with his deckbuilding limitations than his willpower.
