New Ship Tokens

By Duciris, in X-Wing

They have streamlined the ship tokens, removing Attack, Agility, Shield and Hull values. They also removed the clutter and are just leaving the Initiative value (formerly pilot skill) and pilot name.

So, why didn't they remove those last two, giving us a single token per ship? Storing the ship tokens isn't as cumbersome as the dials, but it could have lessened by removing more than half (1+ per ship). Just curious. I figure it would reduce the number of punchboards in each C-Kits by maybe 3+ boards. More for future expansions too.

The only reason I can think of is to make the table more readable without having to reference player cards. Knowing at a glance what X-Wing Luke is in is valuable.

I've been thinking the same exact thing as I've been trying to figure out what all is in the conversion kits. 1 per ship. Boom.

The only thing I can come up with is in regards to alt art pilot cards and future releases. Currently they have an Alt Art Wedge, who is only available as a pilot in the X-Wing expansion. If the ship tokens were generic "T-65 X-Wing" tokens, then I could just get a v2.0 alt art Wedge and not have to buy the T-65 Expansion set (or upgrade via a conversion kit). It's a weak answer, but it's the only one I can come up with.

Well, the other one is that they think it's REALLY important to print the Init on the ship card.

I think it’s to give players a quick way to look over and tell what ship is which, telling at a glance that the ship is ‘Wedge’, and not ‘Red Squadron Rookie’. And the init value is the same way, letting everyone know at a glance who moves/shoots first. Yes, you could just say “What is TIE #3’s initiative”, but it’s quicker this way.

On the other hand, you know looking over and seeing that it’s a T-65 X-Wing what it’s other stats are, normally.

They retained the information that is not subject to change. All the stats that they removed could change in a game. Initiative won't go to zero because of the new damage deck, and adaptability and VI are gone.

Hull and shields change as the ship takes damage. Attack and agility can be reduced by crits.

I'm going to link you over to another thread. There is a C-Kit unboxing stream on Twitch come Friday.

Nah, I'd say we need to keep PS and names. They dropped the others because they were essentially useless on the tokens. Shield and hull were always pointless. The only thing that matters during a game is the current value, which would always need to refer back to the cards. Attack and defend were almost as pointless since there was only a couple values likely for any ship and once you've seen a ship once you pretty much have that memorized.

PS for sure and probably name though you want to keep. For planning phase you need to be able to look at the board and tell the order of activation. Having to look at the board and then reference back to pilot cards would be very clunky and slow the game down, especially if there are multiple of the same model with different numbers.

Pilot names maybe not AS important but it's still useful info to have ON the board. Especially if there happens to be different pilots with the same PS.

Pretty simple.

So you know what ship is what at a glance.

All the stuff they removed you allready know (or can learn to know) at a glance.
