[Blog] X-Wing Buying Guide - SECOND EDITION Edition

By SOTL, in X-Wing

By far the most popular blogs I've ever written are my buying guides for 1st Edition, racking up over 150,000 views to date! A ton of players found them useful, but a whole new edition of X-Wing requires a whole new edition of my buying guides for a whole new group of new players.

I look at the cheapest/best ways into X-Wing for absolute beginners who are interesting in getting into the game for the very first time.

Plot twist: With only six ships released in Wave 1 it doesn't take long.

My guide:

Buy all the things eventually.

Nice, as before. I’ve been wondering about whether to recommend the conversion sets to new players.

I really enjoy your blog. Thanks for posting your new article here!

Seems like a new player could start with just the core and a conversion kit. That way they could try out all the ships and then pick up the models for the ones they like.

Its a practical approach, but realistically most folks want the models because it’s fun

Small comment, there are five factions now.

Yep, worth saying. And I messed up the z-95 in abounds tooth thing.

Nice one, I'll link that to any of my students and my school games club who want to get their own kit :)

Thanks!

I'll be picking up some edits this evening based on feedback I've had so far, including adding some faction background/flavour to help newer players decide which direction to jump in. Might be worth having another look tomorrow

Something that may also be helpful (once we have more info about the conversation kits) a guide oriented around “should I buy this since I have the conversation pieces even though I don’t already own it.” I.E. I’m getting a scum kit but don’t own a second Aggressor or even one shadowcaster, so do I just trade those or should I try and get the ships?

Nice job on the guide. ?

One thing you might mention on the Scum guide is that 2.0 Tie Fighter and X-Wing dials and tokens are expected to be in high demand on the secondary market (judging by the amount of complaints that the conversion kits don't have enough of these). So a Scum only player buying the core set may be able to recoup some of the cost selling off those components, if they are so inclined.

I suspect the complaining on here is out of proportion to what will actually be experienced so I don't want to muddy the waters with the secondary market.

I totally agree the complaining here is out of proportion. I do think there will be a secondary market though, and I do think X-Wings and Tie components (especially Ties) will be in some demand. This is admittedly speculation so I can understand not wanting to muddy the waters as you say. Might be worth keeping in mind to see what actually happens after 2.0 drops and then adding a mention to the guide if my suspicions turn out to be accurate.

Will this be updated as new information comes out?

Yep, though there's not that much new info out. Existence of Lando Falcon needs to be added, but we don't really know very much about it so I can't say if it's worth buying or not!

All I know is that because of X-Wing 2.0 I get to buy multiple packs of the same ship!

My wife (ffff-chhh)* dictated I was only allowed to feed my plastic crack habit if I only bought one of each pack (not ship). Up til now I relied on ace packs and epic ships for extras.

I used to subscribe to the Gary Oldman school of X-Wing:

"Which ones should I get?"

...however, I will admit to not owning a single First Order ship (I'll take my Empire in it's traditional grey/blue incarnation, thank you), and I'll probably use 2nd edition to phase out the Resistance as well.

As a newbie I sold my Armada and bought someone else's mostly rebel and Imperial X-wing collection. Traded some scum stuff and excessive duplicates here and there with some kind players and now have a collection that nearly exactly mirrors the Rebel and Imperial Conversion packs give or take some. Downside is I traded 1.0 cardboard too so have to wait to play now ? .
