quick question about characters, scenarios and expansions

By shodokai, in Mansions of Madness

Hey all.

Picked up the 2ed recently and really enjoy playing but I'm confused and hoping someone will help shed light on it.

I'm puzzled as to why in the second edition game box, there are a score of characters that are not selectable/usable in the app that runs the scenarios that come with the game? I had assumed they would be available after the initial scenario, but that was not the case, all four scenarios still use the basic 8.

Is this simply an incentive to purchase the expansions? If so, why are there characters for the specific expansions? When do these other characters become usable?

Aside from the beef I have for dropping a bill on a board game that comes with only four scenarios, it's decidedly odd to have all these characters that aren't usable in the very game they came with...

It's a small beef though, this is a remarkable game, using the digital/interactive app/dm is truly next gen and the scenarios are clever and engaging.

Peace.

They were included for people who already owned all of the 1st edition content and wanted to use the characters they owned from those products in the new game.

For people who jumped in with 2nd edition, they become playable when you enable the Suppressed Memories and Recurring Nightmares expansions.

Nice! Much appreciated... I was suffering the notion that I'd somehow missed potential scenarios and was losing out.

Thanks for that.

No problem!

A quick note: DO NOT throw out the extra character cards. I know it sounds obvious... but for some inexplicable reason, there are people who have done so, and then they had no way to play those characters when they later picked up the expansions.

Wow... I can't imagine tossing those out!

But then, I'm as into the collecting/collection as I am the gameplay with all board games. My wife laughs when I'm setting up the game... 'easily, the cleanest our table ever is, is right before you set up a game...' ?

As an additional question, I just purchased "Mansions..." plus the Expansions. However, the "Suppressed Memories" and "Recurring Nightmares" packs are both, "Out of Stock." Do I need one (or both) to be able to use the expansions?

No. You tell the app what content you have and it puts content into the game based on that. No expansion is dependent upon owning another expansion.
