Buying Dice set not worthwhile?

By Silverwave, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I've headed to my FLGS, when to buy a dice accesory pack (to have my own set of dice for my upcomming WHFRP game) but then I've noticed the number of dices included. Only 3 characteristic dices? What about neutral stance and 4+ characteristics or characteristic of 5 with only 1 stance dice? 2 fortune dices only? And what about the 1 misfortune and challenge dice?

I wish there were at least 4 or 5 characteristic dices. Only 2 stance dices of each?

And what about misfortune and challenge dices? Aren't those mostly "GM dices" ?

Maybe I would've liked a player dice set and a GM dice set. Players do most of the checks, so they need the most characteristic, expertise and stance dices, and a few fortune dices for the fortune point spent/specialisation/etc.

GM dice set would have mostly challenge dices, misfortune and fortune dices which they hand out to player when they do their checks.

Well... won't buy one since I'll still have to borrow dices from the core set. I'll keep putting all the core set dices in the middle of the table so anybody can draw dices they need for their checks, there's plenty.

The way the dice sets are, you really need two sets to make full use of them. But a few of my players did this on their own initiative, so the cost didn't really bother me. To be honest, it's not much different than D20 dice sets, which are roughly the same price and likewise never quite give you as many dice as you need (only 1 d8?!)

Players really need 2 sets.

Heck, I recommend an additional two sets for the GM just in case others in the group don't bring their own.

I've stated previously that it is obvious that the dice expansion pack is just that; an expansion to the shared pool of dice that come with the game. It's not intended to allow players or GMs to have their own separate set of dice. You could buy 3 or 4 dice expansions and still end up short on misfortune dice while any more than 6 characteristic dice are unnecessary since the rule change went into effect.

I ended up buying 2 packs as a splurge item. I have 3 players in the game I GM. By combining them with the dice from the core set I can have each of my players have their own set of characteristic and stance dice. This is possible because no one currently has a characteristic over 4 and their stances are well distributed (3G/1R, 2G/2R, & 1G/3R). They all have one skill die since no one yet has more than 1 level of training in any skill. They still share 6 each of fortune and misfortune dice along with 4 challenge dice. There's one extra skill die in the shared pool as well if a righteous success is rolled. That leaves me with 2 of each die type behind the GM Screen, except fortune of which there are 4. It's barely enough for combat with low level opponents and I still have to "borrow" dice much of the time. Of course as soon as anyone raises a characteristic, trains a skill for the second time, or switches to a career with a different stance track, the players will be back to sharing more than just challenge, fortune, and misfortune unless I buy even more dice.

Since buying 4 expansion packs leaves you with an odd mix of dice and costs nearly as much as a core set via Amazon, anyone that wants their own set would be better served just buying the game.

I'm planning to buy a second Core Rule Set instead of a dice set. You get more for your money.

But only.... if FFG states clearly rule how to make Rank 1-4 Action cards, cause I dont't want to wait until e.g. the Rank 2 Ulric Spell Action Deck is released in 2014! enfadado.gif

It actually IS cheaper. I spent $72 on dice at the last convention..whereas I could have a second set of books and the dice instead. We've got a gaming group of 5.

Live and learn.

Where I sit, you can buy 7 dice packs for the cost of the core box.

Thats 84 dice.

Almost twice the number core set contains.

But even if I buy 2 dice packs per every player, I will have:

- blue dice to give each player his own set, and keep enough for myself

- more stance dice, then I, and my players will ever need

- white dice in the number that should suffice... for a while

- enough purple, yellow, and black dice for myself, and not enough for my players (2 per player)

If every pack could have at least 2 dice of every type, then buying 2 dice packs per player would be enough.

In the current state, if I buy number of dice packs, that will have sufficient number of purple, yellow, and black dice, for each of my players, and myself, then I am left with lots of spare blue, and stance dice I will never use.

I hope that FFG will start selling some bigger packs of dice, with some better selection of dice types, and individual dice as well (to fill up purple, yellow, and black dice deficit).

I got two core sets for $60 each and one pack of dice. That seems like just enough for five players plus GM. Even so, we sometimes don't have enough of one kind of die (Challenge dice usually) for everyone to roll some.

I just ordered the GM Pack, a backup Core Box and 1 additional Dice Set!

My wife will hit me with the secon Core Box until she scores a critical! sad.gif

Now tonight I can go on creating special Sword and Shield Action Cards! gran_risa.gif

I actually bought 7 packs of dice with gift cards and birthday money (from an online retailer with a significant discount). I just didn't really see the value of buying a second coreset, especially considering I would have then wanted to put all those copy cards in sleeves as well! Seven packs of dice along with what is included in the coreset is more than enough for me to give each of my players a full set for themselves and still have a substantial amount left for myself as GM.

Actually, my Adventurer's Toolkit box is solely full of dice now. aplauso.gif
