Hello there, a bunch of us in my local LGS have gotten into this game. We have some people on the fence and it was mostly due to the fact they say that power creep is already happening. Thoughts ont his
Power Creep.... real or just imagined
I don't see it at all TBH.
Boba Fett looks real good. Is he better than say an AT-ST? Not sure. Right now we have new release units that are more niche than power creep and they are filling niches wave 1 didn't so it feels that way.
With that said. FFG has a long history of selling the new stuff by making it more powerful than the old game pieces. It the business model since stuff doesn't rotate. I don't see them putting in rotation and I don't see them not wanting to make money, so business as usual.
Wait what? How?
In the groups I play here is how all the upcoming stuff is seen:
Snowtroopers are mostly seen as pretty even with Stormtroopers. Just slightly different playstyles.
Fleet troopers are seen as very situational and not as well rounded as normal troopers.
Leia can't solo command and needs to be run with luke to be effective. She is a support commander and can be taken out very easily on her own.
Han is seen similarly but he is much more of a brawler, and if played right can live longer.
Veers is entirely different play than Vader and is an enabler, he is super easy to snipe.
We don't know enough about commandos or scouts yet to know their true power.
Boba is great but very expensive and still on the lower end of health. On top of that he isn't a true commander and his command cards limit your orders to just him.
None of the core units have been invalidated by expansion releases. In fact if you are playing rebels you are most likely still going to be using most of the core set units in your army for the coming year.
Edited by SwdPwnzDggrI don't see any power creep at all. Other than veers to free up some builds I don't see any of the post-core units as must-haves.
Boba looks fast and tanky, but his damage output is far from spectacular. Sure command cards may help with this, but looks like you'll be hampering your command phase to get that bonus damage so meh. To me, he just looks like another perfectly viable option alongside everything else.
I think balance wise we're right on the money right now

Armada has suffered very little if at all from power creep. Xwings problems stem much more from the game outgrowing it original design space and the crazy upgrade bloat
Veers and Snowtroopers came out within the last couple weeks and are the only new units... where on earth is this power creep allegedly coming from?
That's what i was wondering lol, i think they are looking at all the upcoming releases
There are two types of power creep IMO and the game only suffers from one type.
1. I don't think they have created any units that are flat out more powerful overall than older units. For instance Stormtroopers and Snowtroopers aren't out of wack, more powerful units have higher point costs, etc. This is the worst type of power creep.
2. I think we are getting synergy power creep. Veers has different synergy with units than Vader and he makes vehicles more powerful than they would be on their own. I find this to be a good thing but as more units are introduced you will see army power creep around synergies. Over the long term this is where the game can break down.
Still there isn't a major issue right now and games will naturally evolve.

Everything we've seen so far was almost certainly designed before the game even came out. These are still just the baseline units.
Edited by ContrapulatorAll I'm seeing is variety and different synergies, Boba looks amazing but is he any better than an airspeeder or an AT ST I don't think so, less powerful than either but situationally more usefully in more varied circumstances. Vader and Bobs Fett on the table counts for how many points, and Fett could quite be taken out by a Z6 trooper unit at half the cost. Remember unlike armor he is damaged by normal hits (example I took out a unit of 6 snowtroopers on my game 2 days ago, so 6 wounds on red defense dice from a unit of 4 troopers+z6 w/o aim)
Given the ways armies are constructed in this game there will be an overall power level increase as they add new unit types. But this will quickly level out and the initial wave stuff will all still be viable but likely not in the same numbers and quantities as people are using now. this is a pretty standard growth model for a game everyone has lots of the first wave stuff because thats all their is to play with.
Players will always need 3 core troop units and they appear to be extremely conservative when designing these.

I still feel there is enough variety within the 4 units so far in terms of range, and abilities nimble/precise /steady etc, the offense dice as well, look at what you have
White / range 3 /Red defense /Precise
Black/ range 3 / white defense / Nimble
White / range 3 / Red defence / Steady
Double white /Range 2 /White Defense /Ready
each with 2 upgrades that are unique, one generally anti infantry in some way the other anti vehicle /armour and each of those are different, giving a total of 12 different attack profiles for the Corp troopers , that's a surprisingly large variety of options
