With Boba Fett announcement, the operative is a new unit type of which you can take up to two of.
I feel like thats where we'll see a lot of supporting characters like Chewbacca end up as instead of single unit special forces. I dig it.

InB4 Oprative Expansion featuring all of Rogue 1.
yeah Chewbacca, R2-d2 and some others spring to mind.

Not R2, unless they have some sort of droid expansion. Could see Lando there. Imperials will get all the bounty hunters (IG, Bossk, 4-LOM and Zuckuss).
Wonder if they will still "take a commander slot" though.
Boba is easily Commander level lethal. This could spawn into a list being 4 "commanders" in the future potentially.

From the preview article:
QuoteWith Boba Fett’s introduction to the game, Star Wars: Legion also welcomes a new unit type: the operative. Every Star Wars: Legion army can have up to two operatives, letting you pair these powerful units with one or two commanders.
So, yeah, 2 commanders + 2 operatives=5 options for 1, 2, & 3-pip command cards.

True! I can still see Jyn and/or Cassian as commander units though, they did lead the whole thing on Scarif until the rest of the rebels showed up. My best guess is either they both end up as commanders or Jyn will be the commander (since she's a main character) with Cassian as the operative with some cool synergies there.
But the rest of the Rogue One cast would be awesome as operatives too.
Imagine having K2-SO as the first multi-faction operative. There could be a cool double sided "systems/programming" card to him that you equip whether you're using him as an Imperial or Rebel droid. Or maybe he ends up being two different unit types?
He could be a higher points, unique operative for Rebels with more special abilities as since he was reprogrammed, he probably gained some extra skills. While for Imperials, he could be a cheaper, generic special forces unit. Cool possibilities here.
Since we weren't told about the operative unit type until now, I wonder where droids will end up.
Still need a minimum of 3 corps. But that would be interesting, running 3 bare corps + 2 commanders + 2 operatives.
Gather enough big name heroes in your list and just call it the "Avengers."

Zuckuss and 4-LOM did a lot of work with the rebels in Legends...
Could be interesting to have some Operatives that require specific commanders. Wrenga Jixton for example would be a rather interesting one that could require you to have Vader...or, perhaps, Luke due to Vader sending him to help Luke during Shadows of the Empire.
However, I'm rather disappointed that Fett is Imperial since he's a mercenary in many ways and had worked with Rebel groups in Legends to get other bounties...

Sort of hoping they might make an Operative version of Luke or Han so that you could run the main cast together, hopefully with R2 and 3PO as some other grouping so they could be included too.

Pretty much confirms no "scum" faction.
Lando, Chewie, Dash Rendar, Jyn Erso, Phoenix Squadron, Grand Inquisitor, Hondo Onaka, Greedo, Bossk & Co... incoming.
Man I love this game

True. Im not too sad about it actually, it seems like they will be really fleshing out the two factions with a ton of stuff so an army of organized fringe to go against either the rebels or empire doesnt make much sense thematically.
It makes sense in X-Wing to add scum, but I'd rather have two well done factions, with maybe some neutral stuff that would be in a fringe army that can be used for either. Plus, that means they wouldn't have to devote so much time to another faction in the Civil War era and instead add in prequel or sequel factions.

I think the fact that the "3rd imperial commander" ended up being a completely new unit type that you are able to add to your list should make one think that FFG probably has stuff planned for this game that no one has thought of yet.
Instead of worrying about what Legion doesn't have or might-maybe-someday-could have enjoy what it DOES have. Play the game, learn how to use your units if you want to participate in competitive gaming or just enjoy the stories you end up telling with your games if you prefer non-competitive.
It does not mean NO scum faction.. just no scum faction right now.
The thing is, despite being Star Wars, the game is not an assured success. Part of the way to help it become a success is to incorporate iconic/loved characters, and quickly.
If FFG make the game and it fails, at least they could get the characters out. If it succeeds they have an option to add a new Boba card.
To sum up; get the iconic characters out first, prove the game has longevity, expand on it later.
At the very least, they put Boba in as an operative not a commander, which makes sense of sorts.
We can look at this another way as well. There are only two factions; Light Side and Dark Side. These factions can then span multiple time periods, But Boba is only availiable to the Dark Side during a certain time period - the reign of the Galactic Empire, hence part of that faction.
If that idea goes forward, we theoretically could get a character like Chewbacca that could work under multiple factions, like the rebels and resistance.
Herohammer: Star Wars edition. I have mixed feelings about this. Obviously they had to do it to because Star Wars is it's iconic characters, but it will be disappointing if you start seeing lists with 2 commanders and 2 operatives with bare corps units. Not much of an army game at that point.

True, that was totally unexpected! But I think we can definitely say the first Rebel operative will be Chewbacca. Sooooo much potential there.
It's fun to predict and speculate, but I agree with your point. A lot of people have been very adamant about a fringe faction yet we dont even physically have special forces which was "announced" in the core rules. And Im still trying to finish my minis and terrain so I can start playing full 800 point games!

Remember, the 800 points is just a "standard" for tournament play, so you can casually play with more points and thus have more units on the board. Or agree with whoever you're playing with to limit that even further.
Plus these guys won't be cheap points-wise, I suspect they'll price them high enough that adding as many as you can in will hinder more than help you.
So I dont think we'll see that kind of list being played too much. Because an easy counter to a list with 4 characters and 3 corps units is to choose a cheap commander with no upgrades like Veers or Leia, and then spam corps and special forces against them. Luckily this game is more objective based so the more units you have, the easier it will be to secure objectives.
On the Rebel side. Lando- Commander or Operative?...
While he was a general, Lando probably works as an Operative.
But if you want to guess who the Operative counter to Boba Fett is - it's clearly Sabine! Welcome to Sabine-Legion. (Seriously though, she has the jetpack and the cool toys like fett)
Real glad about the addition, there are a lot of Iconic characters they can put in these zones and give them dynamic rules without necessarily implying they command people.
I could easily see, say, Hera as a light commander like Leia, and Kanan as a beefy operative a bit like Luke as a commander.
Man...I really like this Boba better than the Imperial Assault one! I cannot wait for the 3rd quarter...need at least 3 of them now!!!

It means no scum for now. X-wing started off with only two faction (with Boba as an imp) and now is up to 5 with more likely on the way. So yeah, this does mean no scum any time soon but in a couple years when they exhausted the two factions options and need to mix it up there will be a scum faction. Some of us were hoping for it a bit sooner though.
I would say Jyn is a commander and Cassian is an actual operative. But yeah, they won't let Solo stay Solo for too long. The Mighty Chewbacca is coming next.
yeah i'd be surprised to not see Chewy either as next single-fig rebel or the one after that.
Would be epic to see him have some sort of repair mechanic for vehicles

I had assumed that the bounty hunters and iconic rebel trooper were going to come out as special forces, glad that they did it this way. I don't expect to see any characters that are not featured in the films or Disney TV shows because of the way they have pushed X-wing to reboot the game to feature more of the iconic ships instead of the old expanded universe.
Very happy they did it this way. I was predicting Boba as either Empire Special Forces, or Neutral Faction. Looks like I was wrong all around - new unit type and Empire.
