Getting Ready for Angmar Awakens

By Devaresh, in Strategy and deck-building

Been having A LOT of fun with this deck:

and I think I’m going to take it through Angmar Awakens for my Blog. It’s been awhile since I’ve played the cycle, anyone see anything on the sideboard I should be sure to include or any particular warnings?

Also feel free to let me know what you think of the deck if you try it!

Wastes of Eriador doesn't let you cancel shadows at night, so promoting Armored Destrier for that quest may be a good idea.

Oh yeah! Totally forgot about that element of the quest! I will make a note of it for when I get there!

Interested to follow this as I’m about to go blind into this cycle, having just finished Lost Realms box. The deck looks intriguing and I like the hero line up!

Just figured I would update this in case anyone is interested. Got in a block of time this afternoon and clears the first 3 quests, Intruders in Chetwood, Weather Hills, and Deadmans Dike. The deck performed very well!

Another quick update while I’m on my quest high. Just cleared Wastes of Eriador after a super challenging game.

Turn 1 Lost in the Wilderness ate my opening hand, followed a few turns later drawing “Make Camp” which blocked my healing. And I never drew into my stargazer or Zigil Miner. Still managed to dig out a victory though! Binary Sunset continues to show itself to be scrappy beyond my reckoning!

This afternoon I had the day off and got in some solid questing. I got in victories against both Treachery of Rhudaur and Battle of Carn Dum. So that makes one quest left to beat for the cycle (I cleared the mount gram and ettenmoors this weekend) and my deck will have run through the whole thing!

Nice! How many tries did Carn Dum take? We had to build a specific set of decks to take that one out when we played it.

If you count turn one resets then I think it was attempt number 5 or 6 which was actually not too bad. I wasn’t even sure I’d be able to beat it since I know it’s one of the hardest quests.

I think I could have actually done better if I adjusted my deck slightly but once I had a feel for what I actually needed to prioritize the last run went much smoother, still pretty grueling though!

Finished off Dream Realm today so that makes every quest in Angmar Awakens completed with my Binary Sunset Deck! Mission complete! I may write more about my experience another time but I’ll make a couple quick notes here!

I did not switch out any cards, although I did add two Rivendell blades just because I liked the idea of Elladan using one thematically. Not sure if it was ever necessary.

The most attempts on a single quest was actually Escape From Mount Gram which was mostly do to the nature of a Trisphere deck and variance going way against my favor. In terms of actually difficulty I think treachery of Rhudaur might have been the hardest for this deck as it played very strongly against both Battle of Carn Dum and Dread Realm.

Anyway I’ll probably continue to play other stuff with the deck because I’m enjoying it so much. Let me know if there’s any interest in more information on how the deck handled the cycle and I may do a more comprehensive write up using my notes I took.
