IIRC, there was a ruling (doesn't appear in the FAQ) that if you use Mesmerism (or are Sorceress) on the Mercenary, you have to pay to take him. I would say Porter (and it is Miner from Dungeon) fall under the same category.
Talking about Mesmerism:
Can you take the followers of other characters away with Mesmerism (or special abilities i.e. Sorceress), even if you cannot keep them? Example: Holy Avenger if you are evil. Of course you had to ditch them immediately on your board space in this case, but the other player would be weakened.

No. If you can't have an Object/Follower, you can't even take it. Rules mention Monk and Runesword. Monk can carry other, non-align restricted Weapons, even though he can't use them in battle.
